Day first like very mach, was drieving an old artic from Newark to Londinuim, I sheet myself mowst down way their, lots of fun had thow.
My first trunk was a run to Patchway Bristol. I got the impression then that this shiny modern industrial estate (as it was then) would go far in the future.
I’ve not been back there since, so has it?
thought this is crap fell off my pushbike result broken arm oops you meant trucks that was not too bad easy trunk didnt even have to reverse just had a long wait
First day way my brown book was hauling stone from a quarry to laybyes for stockpiles.
thought i was king o the road ,and was a lot cleaner than driving plant.
jimmy.
My first day was in a day cab 2800 Daf with the world’s most evil gearbox, I went to 39 berth in Tilbury and mistakenly tried to reverse a 20’ skelly onto a grid, after a lot of sweating and swearing I got it between the lines, got a box on and set off to my first delivery, where that was I have no idea
went from somerset to littlehampton to find a trailer in a industrial estate at 3.15 am. when i got there it was half on/ off the pavement road on the ■■■■ sort of thing. took me a while to hook it up with a torch in me gob as there was no coupling light.
got 3 miles down the road then the pass window fell of the runner.sorted that and got on me way to avonmouth. pulled into scotney for a break and it was crawling with vosa . reversed back down the entry to the link lane and trimmed on till next stop. job got done by sundown te he .
My first Class C job was with Royal mail, in Hatfield. Arrived there at 10pm but was told to sit in the canteen with the other sleeping stand-by drivers…At 2am TM gave me a nice easy trunk run to Canning town. Got there only to be told some other driver had already picked up the mail
Paid £13 quid an hour to sit in a canteen and drive around in an empty truck. I thought “i could get get used to this life”
My first day’s driving job was as a London bus driver. After passing my test, route learning ect the day had finaly arrived serve the London public. My bus was a routemaster number 23 Westborne Park to Liverpool st station. Turned left out of the garage and drove straight passed the first bus stop outside the garage. looked in my mirror and some guy was waving his unberella at me I thought whats his problem? Then it downed on me that i’m not route/type training anymore and supposed to pick up passengers!!!
Three drops in W1 in an old 814 Merc with a 28’ body on it. Blocked Trafalgar Square through fear of moving, gritted my teeth and went for it.
Scared doesn’t describe it!
Passsed my test at 21 and got a job witha chap who should have worn a 10 gallon hat and spurs I should have known what I’d let myself in for as his company used to bring timber(round timber) in where I worked and would often gross out at 45-50 ton when the weight limit was 38 tonnes. Picked the unit up Friday night after finishing with the old company a DAF(85 or 95 cant remember) it was a 310bhp! Got my instructions, tip Hexham 6.00am Sat morning, fine I thought. Re-load Battle and home
I won’t go into details about start and finish times but needless to say it was more than a days work that got done that day. The horror stories I have working for that firm did help cause every other driving job I’ve had since has been a piece of ■■■■!
