York level crossing

There is a level crossing in York that requires you to obtain permission before crossing. Think its Milfields industrial. A standard artic is under the dimensions listed but when it refers to 44 tonne I wasn’t sure whether to stop or go…as I was empty I proceeded over…

Should every artic stop and use the phone there??

i know a few older signs that still have 38 ton as a limit but i,m buggered if i,ve ever seen anyone stop, 3 or 4 times a week i used to take 27metre long loads down the A17 and the sign at the level crossing near Fosdyke used to say anything over 60ft in length should stop but i could never see the reason for it if the vehicles travelling at normal speed so never bothered

Yea I just kept going too. I’m in roughly 55 feet. So was under the dimensions but the weight said 44 tonne but I was empty so carried on with caution.

The signage and requirements to stop were brought in as a result of the Hixon rail disaster of 1968.

The signs do say OVER, the dimensions given are for a standard full length 44 tonne wagon and drag!
If your “OVER” those dimensions, you should stop.

But why is the layby and phone always on the other side of the crossing ?

Seriously? Even loaded you wouldn’t be over 44 tonnes so no need to stop. If you came to a bridge marked with a 13’ sign, meaning the maximum height of vehicle allowed to proceed is13’, and you were running at 13’ would you have these same doubts?

I’ve always thought the same. The lay by and phone for your side of the road is always after you have gone over the crossing :unamused:

I wonder what the outcome of that was, since it was a 150 tonne low loader under police ■■■■■■ that was hit on the level crossing.

Unless you work for Tesco for most of us our trucks will go over 5mph

What a ■■■■■■■ ball ache it is, especially when an intercity express train is waiting for a platform to be free and it’s across the crossing  I’ve been there an hour before.
