In fact it’s a cheapie basic car Tom Tom that I use as a guide only …with a brain 2 eyes and lots of common sense…oh yeh and a Truck map as another guide alongside it.
Never had a day on the sick either if it packed up. as some on here more than likely would.
Hope that helped.
Agree completely. I use a modest tomtom car one. 75% of my drops are to new build houses that don’t have road names or postcodes. So the latest bells and whistles gadget is just going to be a screen ornament.
Using a satnav is as much an art as a skill, in that you have to know when to follow it, and when to ignore it. The latter consisting of using your eyes and brains to look at a road and the signs and telling yourself that you’re NOT going down there, no matter what that idiot contraption is telling you!

Does anyone know if the tomtom smartphone app has any truck related features as I was considering downloading it and having it as a backup plan
I have the Tom Tom Go app on my phone. It has no truck related features. Works well as a car nav though.

The TomTom my drive app has truck settings but not sure if you need a linked sat nav to use it.

Need TomTom account.
Thought you probably would, I’ve never signed out and tried using it.

Exactly mate, in one.
A sat nav is a guide, YOU drive the motor and decide where it goes and where it doesn’t, not the ■■■■ sat nav, and that is where many go wrong, so the ■■■■ up scenarios occur.
Similar to you my drops are a bit specialised,… farms in the back and beyond, many of which are accessed by totally artic unsuitable roads, so a fancy expensive bells and whistles truck nav would be useless to me (even if I wanted one which I don’t) as it would not ‘‘let’’ you anywhere near my drops.
I love it when some come on here saying truck related accidents are down to some drivers using car sat navs. …yeh right. …just about sums things up today.

iv had a couple of xgodys , what i like is they speak when youre speeding ,loudly, and keep telling me . the only prob iv had is iv had no luck its impossible to do the updates , but cheap enough just buy a new one every 2 yrs
You really need a sat nav to tell you that you’re speeding and as for buying cheap [zb] why not buy a proper one that you can update, no wonder there are problems!!

far as i know non of the tom toms actually speaks words when im speeding [ tom tom i bought flashed a little red warning but did not actually make a noise ] to warn me if im a mile over the limit. oh i know you can say you should already know if your speeding but can you tell me youv not ever ridden into a strange town and not noticed the first few hundred yards youre already into the 30 ? thats the very time youre likely to get caught
I have a Tom Tom 6200 Pro. It definitely makes an audible (and visual) warning when you go over the speed limit.
I have the earlier 6000 model. You can set it to sound a warning every time you exceed the limit, or only if there’s a speed camera. You can also choose which type of camera or speed trap activates the warning (or none at all).
Agree with earlier observations about the TomTom slowing down - seems to happen when it has done several re-routes. I just make sure to always switch off fully at the end of the day, so it gets a fresh reboot next mirning.
On the subject of satnavs slowing down (and possibly locking up too) I have a theory that they may be overheating, seeing as how many are stuck to windscreens directly over vents. Electronics do funny things when they get hot.
No real evidence for this other than mine seems to pick up again when I turn the temperature down for a while.

When I was on Brit European their trucks had trackers which were combined with a communication computer type jobbie (technical term )
My sat nav used to freeze frequently every day, usually when I needed it the most .
Turns out the sat nav GPS signal was compromised with this thing, and it only worked when I set the sat nav at a certain angle on the dash.
Useless piece of info, but there you go.
Personally I would either buy a car version of the Tomtom or Garmin depending on preference with traffic subscription (best feature), or if he’s got the money go all out and buy either the Tomtom 6250 or 6200 - very similar really but both have traffic built in without needing to tether to your phone.
Chinese things for all the ones I’ve tested are usually PDA’s with nicked Tomtom software on them and outdated maps which crash at the most annoying times or just die, and as mentioned don’t tend to have the most sensitive GPS receivers. Plus updates are generally an issue as, well, they nicked the software. Had several car ones and they weren’t worth the space in the car. Plus usually if they have any traffic, you need to tether to your phone.
Truck ones yeah are expensive but they save you a lot of time getting sent down a road where the council decided to save a few quid and not tell you about a low bridge until 200 yards before it rather than at the top of the road. Would fully agree they are a “guide” and they won’t work for everyone such as Robroy with his Middle Earth (sorry, West Country ) trips but just think of it as a passenger who’s planning a route so you don’t have to stop en-route which is especially handy in cities.
Eyeball v1 is still required and it sounds like he’s also got a full working version of brain v1 so he should be fine.
What I wouldn’t do though is use a phone based satnav. OK for someone in a car who rarely goes more than 5 miles from home so needs one once in a blue moon. But for regular use, too many eggs in one basket.
Juddian:
I haven’t a bloody clue which satnav to buy out of these, i’d always plump for a Garmin because they prove reliable and worth the extra for Digi Traffic (free for life), but make sure it’s Digi Traffic and not just Traffic (older system now found on the cheaper range), a world of difference between the two.
Supplier choice however, without a doubt Amazon, but Amazon Prime or purchase Fulfilled by Amazon, delivery due in short order…supplied by them if it proves to be garbage then Amazon customer service we rate highly and they will usually refund no bother…if it’s got a likely delivery date sometime a couple of weeks hence then it’s probably coming from China from the seller direct and you won’t get as much help from Amazon as if they supplied from their warehouses.
This is my Mrs’ advice, we get lots of stuff from Amazon, but only cheap items not going to lose any sleep if it needs to be chucked away if it’s obviously Chinese supply because if it proves faulty or not as wonderful as suggested in the reams upon reams of blurb, it’s difficult getting any worthwhile satisfaction afterwards.
Isn’t it all Chinese made these days?I ask in all innocence?Just procured a tt 6200 from Kuda truck supplies, geezer on the phone seems to think Chinas the manufacturer. Not too concerned mind, they’ve surely got their ■■■■ together after all these years you’d think, but a cheap one,I think not.

I’ve used all sorts from cheapies to expensives. The best in my opinion has been the snooper. However, if I didn’t want to spend that much I’d get the Sygic truck app. That’s also very good. Tom Tom trucker was a complete disappointment apart from the traffic function.
With you on the Snooper,I used mine in Italy a few years ago, multi dropping in some seriously off the beaten track locations and was well impressed with its abilities in demanding scenarios.Just ordered a tt 6200,will be interesting to see how it compares.

TomToms have been made in China for several years now. I have a Rider motorbike unit that I bought new in 2008 - made in China. Foxconn, the company who makes among other things the iPhone (in China) were estimated to produce around 40% of the world’s consumer electronic devices just a few years ago.

Is the device still cutting the colemans?I know theres always the “planned obsolescence” angle in these cases but if your tt still does the business from 2008,I guess they’re worthy of the sizeable outlay.
I have just put 2018 Q3 maps on it, (They run on Igo, which is what Iveco use.) and just gone into the SYS menu, and altered the spoken speech for speeding. Out of the categories that are contained within, in 1, I have replaced “Reduce your speed” to “Slow down you bellend.”

That’s the annoying thing - it still works perfectly, but TomTom decided a few months back to stop offering map or software updates for “obsolete” devices such as my Rider 2 (I’ve also got a 2nd edition TomTom One lurking in a cupboard somewhere, bought new in 2005, which also is no longer supported with map updates etc).
