Yes Men?

Is it just me or are (most) drivers for certain companies “Yes Men”?

I saw a notice up on a wall, lets call them, Beddie Stoptarts. They had an annual pay rise proposition, I had to read it twice just to believe my eyes. In a few of the companies I go to the annual pay rise is in the region of 5-10%, but it appears this is a pay cut in disguise.

They proposed, 43p per hour increase, REMOVAL of the £5 a day fuel bonus, REMOVAL of the “Holiday Allowance” as well as changing the holiday pay to an average of the last 13 weeks worked and loads of other crap that made no sense.

They said YES, well, 687 out of 1122 drivers did.

Enjoy the pay cut lads… Turkeys will be voting for Christmas this year.

Annual pay rise 5-10% ■■?
Most of the companies I go to are still on the same money they were on 10 years ago. Seriously. That’s the way it is in Ayrshire/Renfrewshire anyway.

I know of 3 companies that have given pay rises between 5 - 10%

Unionised places

Only got 2% before, i get pay rises by moving companies.

If you don’t work for them what’s the problem?

Well depends on the detail, such as are you guaranteed the £5 bonus or do most miss out on it?
Maybe they were getting holiday pay at basic hours (no overtime) plus a holiday allowance, but now they’re getting their average overtime included, so it might be that the holiday will be better without the bonus.

Also depends on the loads of other crap that made no sense to you, but might make sense to those who are working there.

How can you the op make judgement as you dont fully understand the full package? Clearly it makes sense to the majority of the workforce there how many said no? how many didnt vote?
It just seems another attempt at knocking Stobarts and is a rather an inane pointless ill thought out post

Yes Votes: 687
No Votes: 435

No mention of “non voters/spoilt votes etc”

The bits I couldnt get my head around was down to the minimum shift payment split between 2 or 3 different contracts down.

Not knocking the company at all, just the drivers. £5 fuel bonus, that will take over 11.5 hours to repay, every shift. So if you are doing 57.5 hours a week or less (over 5 shifts), then it is effectively a pay cut.

I remember all the green army saying that the Fuel Bonus makes the wage “Decent” as a way of justifying the shockingly low rates of £7.■■ per hour basic.

Bonuses etc can be taken away from you, always but always get pay rises on the basic first and foremost, then it’s multiplied at overtime rates etc.

So how do (did) you actually earn the ‘fuel bonus’'?

Bonuses, allowances, overtime are all smoke and mirrors. When it comes down to it, you want the hourly rate.

Drive in the green band all shift, no harsh braking, monitored by isotrak

fuel bonus = no harsh braking, driver anticipation ,maintain momentum,no harsh acceleration, non excessive idling as per fleetboard I may of missed one

Funny things those monitoring systems.

At one place i used to get the best fuel figures in the depot, yet for months/years never got my fuel bonus despite this.

My problem?..allowing the vehicle to overrun in gear on long downhill sections thereby sometimes covering a mile or more absolutely free, secondly the system didn’t differentiate when you ran it into the blue for maximum exhaust braking.

Once i modified my behaviour kept it under power for longer and used less engine braking leading to higher brake wear i got me fuel figures down to normal drink it like its free numbers i got me fuel bonus regularly…cost effective system that :unamused: salesman must have ■■■■■■ hissen all the way to Barbados for his next holiday.

I’m on a bonus thing at my place. Base wage is £20,500 or so a year which equates to £382 a month after deductions but last week I took home £567 after deductions.

First of all you negotiate on the hourly rate or increments involving weekends shift premiums bank holidays and so on, things that are added to you’re contract and can not be taken away, you never negotiate based on bonuses one off or otherwise, or allowances that can be removed without notice, this is where the union comes in and local reps who know there stuff, and are able to communicate effectively with the workforce.

The op sounds like something is being given with one hand and taken with another and make to look like its a good deal, 5 minutes with a calculator and a pen and paper may suggest otherwise, in my 26 years in transport I have learned drivers are none to bright and are always their own worst enemy, a carrot is dangled (usually a rotten one) and they grab it, some of the things I read on this site regarding pay and conditions make me eternally grateful for heavily unionised non profit transport.

:imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:

Yes, Us older employees on a 50 hr contract have had basically a pay cut whilst the newer lads on a 45hr contract have had about a 2% rise.

Out of all the depots it was only us (Widnes) and I think Goole voted against it.

First person to say drivers should stick together and strike for decent wages/better treatment at RDCs yadda yadda yadda this is what happens. Every man for themselves…

I feel your pain mate.

Being in Widnes in the first place is bad enough.

Carlisle overwhelmingly said no too. 4 depots in total but I can’t for the life of me remember the 4th.

My guess is that they’re what they want them to be and that changes by dint of management whim or whatever the latest “new black” might be. Our place have had a “driver challenge” in place for some time but it’s seen by all as a waste of time and effort because despite numerous promises there is no tangible reward at the end of it. Any money saved on fuel is wiped out by the increasing costs of A4 paper and printing ink used up by the “driver trainer” to plaster one wall of the drivers’ room with his propaganda.
