Just gone broadband and it sure is a pleasure to click on trucknetuk on the favourites and see it load in a fraction of a second instead of the interminable wait I used to endure.

I know what you mean Willy - got broadband here about 3 weeks ago
Marky, did that, blistering speed. Wouldn’t have dreamed of looking at that before today as each pic would have taken 10 or 20 seconds to load on the best day and to be honest the best days were quite a while ago, I think the dial up system has been progressively slowing down over the last few months. Understandable as they are going to concentrate on broadband so the investment in dial up is bound to fall off.
i have that pleasure to come, just applied for broadband . so waiting in anticipation.
It is brilliant except for 1 thing.
You get finished sooner, on dial up you had to wait for pages to load, but they are that quick now, you run out of pages to visit you end up thinking what else you can do

I have that problem too
I tried Broadband last year had problems with it rang up my ISP to find out if I’d done anything wrong. It turns out that because I’m having to use extension leads because we live in a flat & the main socket is more than 10mtrs away from the computer it wouldn’t work, so now its a case of moving the main socket into here. As anybody else had this sort of problem or could help.
If you get a heavy duty extension cable (armoured etc), that might help. Comet do a 10 metre and a 15 metre one but they’re quiet expensive. Can you move your computer a bit nearer?
BT quoted us £104.00 to move our main socket. We havn’t had the bill through yet and have plenty of credit with them anyway, so it won’t sting us when it does come. It got to me a bit though. The council refurbished our house a good few years ago. When we moved back in, the phone socket was behind where my 'puter is now. We got BT to run an extension through into the hall, where we wanted the phone. They blanked off the first socket and hooked up the extension into that. To move the main socket, all they had to do was put a socket in instead of the blank, where the main socket has always been. It took all of 10 minutes to do, when the engineer turned up to do it.
Simon thanks for your reply I’m afraid the computer cant be moved & I dont fancy £104 to move the main socket. I’m going to change this computer shortly so I shall try again failing that I could go cable with NTL. Thanks again.
Don’t forget the armoured cable option. They are a bit expensive in comparison to standard phone extension, but if you havn’t already tryed tthem, they could be the answer. They are armoured against you damaging them by standing on them and they are proof against interferance by all the other electrical items around your house(like TV, radio, washing machines etc), which is aparently wha
When you change your 'puter, shop around. Don’t go for a Tiny for eg. They are cheap but there are lots of iffy (?) things about them. For eg, the fitted modem is ‘optimised’ for (I think) Supernet, in Tiny’s case that means it won’t work with any other ISP. You also don’t get a copy of your OS, they instal it for you. If you want a copy, you have to pay them over the odds for it. I reckon that although the box of bits is cheap, by the time you have payed for all the things you would expect to get with it, you are not getting it any cheaper.
I did a bit of research, to decide what I wanted to go in my box of tricks. Then I priced everything up with the intention of doing a self build. Then I trawled the shops looking at the prices of what was on offer at the right price range and then went to my local ‘puter shop. I gave them my spec’ list and asked them for a quote. Their price was about a £10 more than my total, so they got the job. It came with the guarantee that it would work, when I switched it on, which a self build might not have.
Have a look at the PC Answers mag forums. Like here its free to register and you can ask any tech questions you like. If you havn’t had a look through the forums and repeat a question, you are very likely to be flamed tho’
Arfa Job
If the modem has an ethernet port you could try a wireless router from £25 up with a wireless PCI card from £14 up. If not you can get a wireless router with a built in modem for a bit more.
I’ve recently had Broadband and I use it from an extension socket with no problems.
The line comes into the Hall where the main socket is located. It then has an extension into the bedroom. I tapped off this extension, back into the loft, down through the airing cupboard and through into the small bedroom. I’m probably 30 metres (cable length) from the main socket.
If I had problems, then I would simply rewire the whole system with eight core cable and locate the main socket next to the computer and run the extensions back through the spare cores.
It all depends on whether you have ready access to the cable runs.
Thanks all for your replies I will try these out & let you know.
I have a 4MB telewest fat pipe, Zoooooooooooom.
I’d suggest putting a wireless router by the socket that’s already in place, and get a wireless card for the PC. Then you can surf from anywhere in the house and not worry about cables. Then of course, you can just hook in new machines (like laptops) without worry or effort. Just plug and go.

How much is that a month??
I’ve had broadband here in Germany from day 1 and it is much better priced than most of the UK tariffs.
The speeds I see quoted for b/b in Uk seem a bit of a cheat! I don’t think anything less than 1MB should be called b/b. Here you can chose between 1, 2 or 3MB. I still have the 1MB, all in with line rental, ISDN & flat rate + 24/7 is less than Eur 60 per month!
I’m resisting any of the faster speeds because I will get too used to them and when we move back to UK the slow speeds will really P* me off!!

Yes, its nice when you goto the banking site and it doesn’t timeout due to the modem speed
It also makes life easier for being “Always on”. I’m on a static address, always on, unlimited connection… I think I actually managed about 75gb of transfer in one month
