Writing out a CV for a noob

So, having got the class c license and hope to be doing my cpc practical soon I got to thinking, I will have to start handing out cv’s as I intend to start knocking around a few local companies, calling agencies or applying online so I will need a CV .

The only issue is…I have no idea what to put on my cv or cover letter :open_mouth:

I have written a cv before but it’s all based around by career (to date) in security …sorry!
I know I’m going to have to…cut it down a bit, maybe putting down some basic previous work history with references?

So any help would be appreciated!

Personally I don’t have a CV. I’ve never submitted one for any job I’ve got (been in haulage about 8 years)

I don’t apply for jobs with an application form and I don’t work for agencies.

I know this some what limits my scope for employment but I’ve never struggled to find work and I’ve never advertised beyond ringing around blokes with lorries and going an speaking to people who run firms.

I question how much faith employers put in CVs and how much they put in getting off your backside and speaking to them.

I imagine so called logistics specialists would require a CV or agency in the first place to get on for them. I have no desire to work for a logistic specialist or be a number on a payslip or be considered a trucker.

I work for a haulage firm and drive a lorry and the day I work for a logistic specialist or drive a truck, I’ll hang up my keys and throw my licence in the bin, disappear back into the workshop for whence I came.

HTH

Er…thanks

1 . how old are you
2 . what relevant past jobs have you had that PUT you in contact with transport …not actually working in transport

Did a short stint in Merchant navy (3 months age 18) so worked with 20ft,40ft and reefer containers. Good working knowledge of the twist lock :unamused:

Other than that just see the lorry coming on and leaving site during the day.

you need a full cv then fella

Name
addy
phone etc

licence car / truck valid to from
digi card valid to /
dcpc

the 1st bit of ur cv needs to explain what you bring to the job ie driving working as a team player but also able to work on ur own. and what you expect to get out of the job ( if the employer gets past that then your half way in)

then list
additional training that you have done, ie security qualifications hi ab haz chem etc

present job - skills

previous job - skills

etc

etc

school - qualifications

as i’m an old driver I missed the last bit ( schooling ) as half of the HR people wouldn’t understand the GCSE’s system

Thanks! I have some GCSE’s somewhere.

If you’re going to post out applications your covering letter is where you let the firm know why you want to work for them specifically (or at least make it sound like you do) and what you can bring to them to make you more appealing than the other applications they receive.

A few notes on cv/letters;

don’t use too many different fonts or colours
don’t use too much bold or big type
you no longer have to give your date of birth however sometimes it’s useful
Unless you have a lot of relevant experience your cv will probably just be one or maybe two pages.

If you want to do a draft and pm it to me I’ll give you my opinion/pointers. I’m not an expert however having hired a decent amount of staff in my time (including drivers) and gotten most jobs I’ve gone for I’ve seen and written a fair few.

If you’re going to go out on foot and drop your cv at firms maybe consider having a photo on it, that way they remember you better when they go back to the file of possibles.

Good luck
