i was asked today if i would go to oconners in widness to do container work, bur i refused as i was not that comfortable with doing it as i have never done container work before. surely there has to be some degree of trainning before you can do containers.
if you were me would you of done it bearing in mind i have a regular job.

You should of went in. Its ok in O’Conners. I know someone was asking about them recently but i don’t know much about them except to say i’ve been in there a few times and it was ok. I never had to go to the docks or anyting with them, all the containers i took or delivered where to and from their yard. There’s not to much to know about containers, four twistlocks hold them on, make sure you have the doors facing the rear , and if you don’t know whats in it go easy as you don’t know how the loads distributed. The worst thing about them is knowing all the formalities/protocol when you are delivering into docks to pick up or collect containers. Thats a bit of a pain first time round, but all i ever done was ask and found everyone would tell you where you needed to go and what to do etc.
When I was on containers I used to go to O’Connors regularly and it’s a straight forward set-up there, blokes are friendly & helpful. As said above make sure all the twist-locks are secured and the doors are facing the rear. Have to admit that I once picked up box from Goole and got to Hartshead for ■■■■■ when I noticed container was back to front , had to drive back to get it turned around, needless to say there were quite a few comments
I picked one up on a Friday evening in FX on one Bonfire Night. There was only a skeleton staff on. Our yard was in the docks. Came back on Monday morning & realized they had put the wrong one on. No box check , no seal check. But I would have been captured at the exit gate.( Check the box number )
When I started on containers i must have had all of ten minutes training. Which mostly consisted of somebody telling me how to shorten skellies and telling me to take it easy on roundabouts as they have a nasty habit of falling over. The rest you find out as you go along. If in doubt ask as some one will always help you out, they might take the pee in the process, but they will put you right.
It can be boring though. I think I’ve reached my boredom threshold over the last couple of days.
