aye.it is strange how things work out and how driving a wagon managed to allow me to move to Canada. A little swerve now and again and I would have finished my apprentiship as a fitter but working inside does my head in so still would have ended up on the road.
Yes, it’s my insurance policy.
Yes
the maoster:
Yes I probably would, not that I had a lot of choice the first time around as I was posted to a tank transporter regiment when I was aged 18.However, if I could turn the clock back to them days I’d do what a mate of mine did, whilst I was ■■■■■■■ every penny against the wall and attempting to screw every woman in West Germany he was putting every penny he earned into buying property. He retired when aged 40 and now lives in a massive villa in Spain after selling his 40 odd houses in London. Hindsight eh?
Yeah but you had a better time though didn’t you, go on admit it, didn’t you
Absolutely Roy! I had a great day time . 40 and retired does sound bloody attractive though.
Yes. Because if I hadn’t I would be in deep doo doo and probably working in a supermarket since my business got in trouble
its funny we moan about the job yet most of us have earned a decent living from it for years no its not perfect but then what is ? ive been on the road for nearly 30 years i have a nice house and car a pretty good lifestyle i can afford most things me an my wife need we enjoy decent holidays yes i work hard but never expected to get something for nothing so i wouldn’t alter my choice of work
Yes, I would. I had a break of 7 years and came back to driving. Like has been said, every choice you make leads you in a different direction and I can’t complain where I am now.
Yes.
But equally if someone paid for a different qualification for me I’d do that too.
No if I could get out tomorrow I’d jump at it.
Thankfully I’ve only got another 3and a bit years left to do, It’s gone from a job I loved to a job I hate now.
Yes prob would have done sooner but that another long story
Yes because it’s given me the best potential wage over anything else I’d likely have taken on. Plus nearly 12 years after passing my class 1 I’m still very happy in my job. I still get a buzz out of driving an artic and I’m fulfilled.
I’ve got a good quality degree, and I rejected a professional career in favour of lorry driving because the grass is definitely not greener on the other side.
If i could change the past theres a whole lot of other things id change first !
But regarding the class 1 i wouldnt do it now .
I did 4 days training and test on 5 th day . straight into class 1 , for i think £280 .
I guess that for that money was a good investment
Hell yea I would. I’ve been to some great places and seen some great sights that I would never have done without a Class 1
I wouldn’t. I only did it in the first place because of the freedom of the job and the opportunity to travel widely abroad, both of which have all but gone now.
no id fail its not maid the same way I liked them back then
Harry Monk:
the freedom of the job and the opportunity to travel widely abroad, both of which have all but gone now.
Can’t argue with that Harry, especially the freedom bit.
The advent of phones, and later trackers ■■■■ ed that part of the job up big style.
blue estate:
If you could turn the clock back would you still take your HGV test ?
I would, I’m not scared or worried.
I never had to take a test as the government at the time loved me so much they gave it to me its very difficult to say if i would join the trucking industry again today…i think i would still like the freedom the job gives, and also the travelling it involves…i am still working on international work, at aged 69…so shows what the job can be like or what it has given me. Things are not the same as they were though, with the modern trucks and sleeper cabs, drivers have most of the comforts of home, and therefore dont want to socialise anymore, would rather stay in than go out. I have many comforts too, fridge, good supply of food and drink, tv, sattelite system, but i still like to get out where i can, i eat out most of the time, especially abroad, but because i dont depend on the money i can eat out most times, and socialise abroad and in the uk, the other advantage is i run on foreign plates and therefore no need to pay overpriced MSA charges.
I would,if I had any other job I’d probably be working 5 or 6 days a week instead of 4
