Before the trackers were introduced I used to park in a layby less than a mile away from my house, drew the curtains, locked it up & went home for a decent hot meal, big bed & tele, paid on time/in full no questions asked about what I got up to in my time…!
I was tipping down the road from where my mum lived so went over there for a shower and a meal before being driven back to the truck. Could have stayed the night but wanted an early start…
Would I sleep in my own bed while on a night out?? …yes
Which is why the stockyard is a brilliant night out for me.
Park up, have dinner, a few beers, go home & return the next morning
There is no legal obligation to sleep in the cab. If you choose to stay in a hotel then the company have to pay.

That’s a nice idea
Be great if it were true but it’s not
Done similar myself a few times …
My house was 20 mins drive from the yard and found that I was almost out of hours so parked up on ind est 2 mins walk from my house and slept in my own bed
Booked off and back on at where I parked so all legal
what good bits of info fellas, i mainly do agency and a few weeks ago got caught short with no night out kit so got onto them and said would you book me into the hotel close by, his answer was no mate we dont do that so i say fock the night out im driving back so he mentioned load security which was hv so i said im not a guard im off home, about turn from him he gave 40, night out and 30 to stay in cab dig your heels in and fock em
It’s all very well saying its legal to do this and I’m not a security gaurd and all the rest of it.
But any decent driver would try his best to find somewhere secure for the night. If you were happy with where you parked. Happy enough to sleep in it then I would assume its safe enough to leave it and stay at home. I wouldn’t see the problem with it.
However if you knew you were gonna run out of time and passed secure, safe parking to get closer to home, I don’t think i would be happy with it if I was a boss.
Can you park truck at home no?
Wasnt there someone on here a few years back done this and the motor got nicked from the layby.
I was wondering what the insurance stance would be on this, does it make any difference if the vehicle is left unattended and the load is pinched?

I can sort of empathise with this, there are people at my place that don’t do nights out, they made it clear in their interview and there are plenty of “day” runs, in which case I wouldn’t carry my night out gear either. If I then ended up on a night out because of a ‘can you just nip here’, phone call I wouldn’t be too impressed either.
However I do, do nights out, was told I was doing Makro Reading on Tuesday, “Reading, that’s a day run deffo”, I didn’t take my night out gear got to work and although it said Makro Reading on the ‘run name’ not a single drop in or around Reading, the closest I got was New Covent Garden Market, the rest of my drops were further south, got caught in traffic and had to rough it for the night at Birchanger oh well at least the night heater worked.
It`s not an obligation to stay with your motor,as long as the vehicle is where you say it is and safely parked nothing can be said, where you stay or sleep has nothing to do with anyone else,as long as your back for the start of your shift.
shandy whats your point
If I had the option of overnighting near enough to base and near enough to home I would find a way to probably get home. But more often than not, I’d overnight away from home.
we always used to do this, run out out of time about 30 mins or so out, get a ride home and then a ride back out next morning, Home on the fiddle, them where the days

Sorry but it is. They can not force you to sleep in the lorry end of. If I can ever be bothered I will find the text stating the fact.
I have to sleep in hotels regularly, it means living out of a bag but I get paid £23.50 for the inconvenience of free wifi, en-suite, cable tv etc, I can live with that.

They cannot force you to sleep in the cab, and they cannot stop you using a hotel if you choose, but apart from paying you the night out allowance they don’t have to cough up anymore for a hotel.
I’m not sure that legally they have to pay you a night out allowance but someone will correct me on that if wrong.
(by legally, i am not referring to contracts etc)
