Would you leave the truck driving game?

If you was offered a job with similar pay would you get out of the game ?

God, yes!! I’m working on getting out right now.

Too flipping right I would, keep drumming into the kids to get some quals so they have some choice and don’t end up stuck in a dead end job with no hope of bettering themselves, I made that mistake and now I’m stuck in a rut as trucking is all I can do
And look after your teeth!! Sadly another regret of mine

Yes…
Ironically I’ve just said I don’t regret being a driver in a previous post but I am looking to change career.
I spent 2 years getting up to a level 3 qualification in counselling. The diploma is a 2 year course and quite time consuming so it’s been on the back burner for a while. My plan is to take it up again in September when the new course starts.
It’s emotionally draining but satisfying.

No I would not, given the right job at the right firm it’s the best job going if you have the right frame of mind.
I did sort of get out of it when my daughter was born, went cabbing(another good job if done right, but not as good as trucking), 8 years in fact but did a few months in the summer, I bet that is one of the biggest regrets a driver will have, not seeing your kids growing up.
Been back full time for nearly 2 years now, tramping on containers.
Paid to sit on my arse all week.

I would leave even if it was less pay. I used to enjoy the job but not any more, the hard bit I finding something else.

+1

Why would I want to give that up?

No. I stalled on finding a job because I wanted to carry on driving, so far it’s paying off.

I did that about 12-13 years ago, the diploma course is very good (If it is still the same!) It made me so self aware and aware in general, I couldn`t go forward and become a full time counsellor, as all I would have been doing, was lying to the clients!
You are conditioned in a way that enables others to go on working and thus contributing to the way society is today (Conforming!) Not a good thing in my veiw.
I did extra study regarding Asian phiosophy and philosophy in general…I think that is how I formed my opinions.

Nope, i’m as happy as a pig in the mire.

Go to work, treated and paid well whilst there, go home every night to a woman who’s pleased to see me, why would i give that up.

Yes ,served my time as a truck mechanic then “saw the open road”
what a load of bollox,if it aint plod down your neck its ■■■■■ customs,if it aint customs its them twots vOSA,not them some ■■■ in an office, not them then the ■■■■■ wife.

Not worth the ■■■■■ grief. Now work 200 mile from home playin with trucks and trailers, know my start time my finish time and double the money. And still free.

Dont get me wrong loved my days on the road but just tooo much ■■■■■ out there now.
too many diks and too many fekers telling me “the rules”
Enough bull ■■■■■

No . I love driving trucks and my own company so the job is ideal for me . The trick is , and it took me a while to suss it out , is not to take all the , H&S hoops , crap planners , poor drivers , whingers , brown nosers and any other negatives , to heart and rise above it . I have learnt to just smile and crack on , people are so intent sometimes in making others miserable , life’s too short . I just wanna turn the key and drive where I’m needed , that’s all .

Up and till 2001 when I was retired injured I would never had left the trucking game.Happy as larry tramping uk/eu no probs.Looking at the job today dcpc, digital tachos, planners, extortionate parking fees, lack of decent parking, wtd, and some ive missed,no thanks I did 30+yrs but the job today I feel sorry for you lads and lasses out there, I would never go back now the job stinks,oh and one thing that slipped my mind for most of you[from what ive heard] crap wages.
regards dave.

P.S.I forgot no decent kip for fear of getting load, diesel, or both pinched.

After 37 years in the game as man and boy, I would leave tomorrow if the pay was the same with less hours. I could then have a social life, know I’m going to be home at ■■ time, know I start work at ■■ time, and not have to put up with the absolute ■■■■ this job gives you for scant reward.

I’m fed up to the back teeth of kids half my age trying to tell me that it should be done this way and that, I’ve forgotten more than they’ll ever know, sick of offices ringing me up and giving me grief and always taking someone else’s side when they know that I AM RIGHT. Fed up of drivers of smaller vehicles ringing offices and blaming me for THEIR misdemeanours, and the office being judge, jury and executioner before hearing my side of the story, ■■■■■■ off of all the rules that we have to run to, and some of them that contradict themself but hey, VOSA and the knobs in parliament know best.

So in a nutshell…yes I would leave tomorrow.

Ken.

The answer is yes . . . BUT!!

And the but is finding the right job. I’m not interested in warehouse work and I’m certainly not interested in office work (couldn’t do the politics). I would have to be outside or at the very least multi-site so I don’t have to spend too much time in someones company.

Still looking, but until that time comes we plod on.

Stan

21st century now mate. Any man and his dog can further his or her education at any point in their life.

Best job in the world. Relaxed, easy and varied. Reading most of the posts on here I can only conclude that you’re making the job hard on yourselves.

I don’t fuss, stress or let morons wind me up. Never have done. I work how I work and if that’s not what they want I don’t stay. Instead of moaning in RDCs or on here have a reasoned conversation with your office. If that doesn’t work find a new job.

I’ve worked in pretty much every part of this job as and when it’s suited me and my circumstances. Got a nice house, cars and a decent standard of living. Seen the world and continue to meet different folks and see different places everyday.

Seriously, some of you need to MTFU and take a hold of your lives :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I’ve answered yes…

but it would have to be a very very good job. Mon - Fri 9-5 or earlier… for the same money, nothing else would do as i’ve got it very good.

I like driving, yeah I can do with a bit less of the crap we have to put up with but if the option was more cash elsewhere then I’d be off. My prime function is to provide for my family. Cash is king and all that.

Yep, i’ll be leaving soon. I like the job but it doesnt pay well enough and i want to do long hours on my terms, not someone elses.
