Would You Drive A Hino?

I’m hoping to get a job on a firm who run them. I like them from what I’ve seen, no frills and basic, a bunk as standard, high driving position, good off-road etc.
Who would drive them and who’d rather do something else?

No. Absolute garbage. Gearbox is the worst I’ve ever used.

+1

I’d drive a horse and cart if the money was good

Having road tested one

Yes, the cab with the “bunk” … well its not really a bunk but gives a bit of space to store stuff  and ok for 40 winks.
they go well enough but dont expect top of the range performance

they are pretty light with the right body work always a consideration when on tipper work especially aggregate

the only issue that may arise is local dealer back up as HINO dont yet have a great dealer network

Its a no frills work horse- you wont get your heated seats or multiple coffee holders, but will do the job

A big +1 from me there. I would drive anything for the right money and conditions.

I’ve driven one in New Zealand and lived to tell the tale with no ill effects!!
I presume your talking about a tipper?? Haven’t seen too many tractor units in the UK although I’m sure there must be the odd one floating around. As long as you get paid does it really matter that much??

Drive one by all means but NEVER considder taking one on as an O/Driver as they break regularly and are very expensive to repair & I know of one that’s had three clutches in just over 12 months. (with a decent driver)

Ross.

If it pays the bills who gives a ■■■■ what badge is on the front. Wagons don’t pay bills money does.

+1…I’d drive a shopping trolley round Morrisons if it put plenty of money in the bank every friday morning

See to be honest i’ll drive whatever the boss puts in front of me to do the job, if i want to pick and choose what i drive then i would be a o/d.

As others have said the vehicle is a means of earning a living. If someone offers you a job driving one, grab it.There aren’t that many jobs around.

I had one for 2 years as an O/D. All it cost me on top of normal maintenance was £57 for an air over electric valve for the horn(a common fault).I even lived in it for 3 weeks but you need an extra mattress on the bunk 'cos it’s just an upholstered plank. There’s nothing wrong with the gearbox(it’s a ZF I believe)but the cables connecting it to the lever need setting up properly or the change is appalling. No worse than any other cable change though.Don’t remember even adjusting the clutch.
I would happily drive one full time again.

If you are tall then forget it…Im 6’2 and struggle in our Hinos. My knees are rubbing on the dashboard and you sit so high up that the external sun visor blocks your view.
The gearbox is a sideshift 4 next to 4…in otherwords when going from 4th to 5th you “knock” the stick sideways. Takes a bit of getting used too and sometimes when you need a rapid gearchange you can get in a muddle. I also find the geabox horrible when the truck is a couple of years old and its awkward to get some gears in without having to force it in.
The bunk IS NOT AN AWAY BUNK!!! Its narrow and its very very hard…ok for 45 min snooze.
Personally I think they are a bag of ■■■■■ and would stear clear of them.

Was it a 700 series?

hahaha - i bet you can guess what i’m going to say…
i would rather have a fifteen yr old scania than the 60 plate hino i have at the minute.for all its faults,i thought it was growing on me until i did a day back in a daf cf-lots of things to fault there i know, but ■■■■■■■ hell, what an easier day it was just by driving a half decent motor.
if the money is good and it suits you to take a job that entails a hino then do it obviously, just dont take a job because you are offered a nearly new hino instead of driving an old motor for another firm!!!

if you get lumbered with one you will wish you had your old foden alpha instead…
