Worst place for lorry thefts

Where is the rest of them.

Sussex has been revealed as the worst county for HGV thefts, with 87 incidents reported to the police since 2020, according to a freedom of information request.

Of the forces that responded, Sussex came out top, followed by Hertfordshire (67), Bedfordshire (38) and Derbyshire (14).

Included in the data provided to vehicle mitigation systems manufacturer Heald, Sussex had 10 dropside lorries and 20 tippers reported as stolen over the three-year period.

Locations the vehicles were stolen from in Sussex included streets, industrial estates, open air car parks and laybys.

In Bedfordshire, hotspot towns for lorry thefts were Luton (6), Kempston (4) and Bedford (4).

Tagging cargo theft as freight crime would save operators more £700m a year, say insurers
In Derbsyhire, a truckstop and an HGV storage yard were targeted and Heald said lorry parks had become key locations for thieves in recent years.

In May, two men were charged after stealing £125,000 worth of chewing gum from a service station in Gloucestershire, while in August perpetrators stole £250,000 worth of trainers from a lorry at Lockerbie truck stop.

Heald MD Debbie Heald said perimeter protection for locations where HGVs park was essential: “To help stop HGV theft, haulage, delivery, and freight companies should consider implementing physical security products to mitigate theft and attacks,” she said.

“While there may be the initial investment to consider, by mitigating such attacks and thefts, communities will not only have access to a vital resource, but the financial loss and impact on insurance claims will also be lessened

I think absolutely anywhere in the UK is a potential hotspot nowadays.

I tend to park in truckstops nowadays a lot more than I used to,.especially since my firm threatened to charge us if fuel.was nicked :open_mouth: , depending or not whether THEY thought and considered that you had parked in a ‘dangerous’ place…
So taking my first sentence into consideration, it left them open to saying anywhere was dangerous basically.
So now they are getting beaten with their own stick by me covering ny arse (as ever),…
For the last 6 months I have cost them around £90 a week, where as before that, I parked in ny own little secret places that were free.
24 weeks so far at 90 to a 100 quid.and counting.

South Wales always used to be bad, a triangle between Swansea, Newport and Merthyr Tydfil.

The list of safe places would be shorter.

The list of safe places would be shorter.

Yep,.and that list would not include ANY motorway services,. which should be the epitome of safe parking after how they rip us (not me btw) off with their extortionate charges. :smiling_imp:

I’ve had 3…

Nicked in my career.

One when I left the keys in it in south London whilst checking in to a tray wash. Plod found it abandoned in Dulwich high street. Little sods nicked my butty box.
Two was a Foden that was stolen from the yard over a weekend. Lost all my kit and the gaffer blanked me.
Three was a DAF from Southampton. They flattened the gates with it on the way out. It was never seen again. The firm then spent a fortune on an indestructible steel gate with post’s that were pile driven into the ground. A defended padlock the size of a shoe box was the cherry on top of the security package. About a month later two more DAF’s were stolen. The scallys avoided the unbreakable gate of security by driving through the 20 year old rusty fence to the side of the gate.

 Weakest link in the chain and all that.

I can understand why Sussex is bad, sadly the lack of secure lorry parks could be something to do with it. Parking on industrial estates and lay-byes is the only option for many drivers and those carrying valuable loads in a curtainsider will always be high risk.

I live in Hastings and the only official lorry park in the town closed many years ago to make space for an art gallery! I made representations to the local council when the lorry park was closed but was ignored. I’m now retired but I was very lucky that when I was driving and had night out at home I had secure places to park.

i had the yard shunter stolen in corby , they managed to get it from geddington rd to corby town centre , pretty good achievment for an F86 with only 3 gears ( all low), no lights , left a smoke screen behind it , windows missing etc . didn’t actually recognise the reg when the police phoned, only when they said grey volvo that it clicked.

Anywhere in South Yorkshire is bandit country, and it is well documented.

Ken.

Anywhere on the A1 between Doncaster and Pontefract has been bad for over 20 years. The police have known for years but hazard a wild guess what they do.It is pure libel if I were to suggest a trawl through traveller camps in Thurnscoe.
Some years ago my daughter’s company had a van stolen in south Leeds and the tracker pinpointed it to a traveller camp. The police were informed ,and the company was told “Best of luck with that, lad.”
