World Wide Currency: Pallets

No, really, apparently so…

Pallets, single most important thing in the global economy

I know we all deal with them day to day, but I didn’t know Chep came from Australia!!!

CHEP= Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool think it was set up in WW2 for moving supplies
I used to work for Brambles the Oz company that now owns CHEP (only because my nephew is the CEO) but its who you know not what you know

In a previous life, I used to deal with CHEP…I had a New Zealand guy who came to see me from CHEP…I ended up asking him why he had left a beautiful place, to come over to the UK and chase peices of wood in the shape of a pallet…He couldn`t answer that one!

Chep having a right bad time off it now major “blue chip” company’s have moved off them walkers are on the brown ones and I think Pepsi is also (?)
The brown ones scare the life out me when lifting off from the side due to there design they lean forward . Not to good when a expensive palet off drink !

Shame more don’t use whites

Agreed, in the past I have had many a low paying job made acceptable by being able to flog 24 white pallets a day at £2 a time.

I remember back in the late 1980’s that somebody set himself up as a kind of private eye and used to take photographs of drivers selling pallets, and would then phone up the truck owner and grass the driver up for doing this, offering to sell the employer the photographs. His business foundered when every boss he phoned told him to “■■■■ off and mind your own business!”

That’s called “Not doing your research properly” :stuck_out_tongue:

The brown ones come from a mob called IPP Logipal. Seem to be getting a big outfit now.

Need to vary where you take them otherwise the pallet places start fleecing you. Best to leave behind any with bust slats then they don’t have the opportunity to knock money off for broken ones.

Euros are best as they’re more robust and they can’t not give you a fixed amount each. Other than that you can get £5+ each if you’ve got a regular tip that buys them in.

Have been given stillages quite often by customers that didn’t want them.

Would always check with the gaffer first but most will be ok and usually don’t want empties back at the yard.

Chep have such a monopoly I can’t see how it could make financial sense to take a pop I could imagine you might have to run at a loss for years to get market share.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained maybe? But I too have noticed a few blue chip companies using IPP, so they must be doing something right.

CHEP probably make more money out of the plastic palletboxes used within the auto logistic insustry, there is more JIT work and it pays both ways for them, cleaning and transport.

Another major change is with the Tank Log with companies like Hoyer, CEVA and Gefco where they send out small quantities of chemical and confectionery in stainless tanks.

I remember when GKN Chep were the only company who did this type of thing. Their success has probably hurt them
