Live in the south west close to the M5 ,
Was out walking off Xmas lunch and a few Asti’s about 5pm on my walk I am quite close to the M5 , couldn’t make out names of companies but the part of the walk I could see the M5 seen about 4-5 artics and a bulk grain haulier + a couple of tippers , any one know who works on Xmas day .
Milk collections/deliveries still happen. The cows don’t care that it’s Christmas. Worked both Christmas Day and New Years Day when I was on the milk tankers. And for no extra money as it fell on my shift pattern of 6 on 2 off

Worked Xmas day for 7 years doing newspapers, started at 7pm or so and back home for around 3am. Handy night and guaranteed 10 hours at double bubble in tbe early 90s was worth about £22 an hour. Not bad brass for them days. Was a teetotaler then so not drinking was not an issue and kids were normally ready for bed shortly after I left and I was up on boxing day around 9-10 so no great hardship for the family as such. Plus the wife at the time had grown up with her dad and uncle being drivers so knew the score regarding unsociable hours etc etc.
Lots of…
Spanish motors parked up today around Spalding.
I popped to the garage and saw a Maxi Haulage Volvo with double deck trailer hurtling towards the motorway. Can only assume he had some essential easter eggs on board for Tesco or something.
Went from Grantham - notts yesterday and can’t remember a lorry either way , none in lay-by on a52
I do remember over the years a few who didn’t get back Xmas eve , so ran in Xmas day , but was early 4/5 am , could it of been lorries running in , sure out of the 1,000,s on road some wouldn’t of made it back
I didn’t personally but it’s horses for courses innit? Cows still need milking etc and I suppose there are a myriad of things that simply cannot stop.
One of my mates at work did, he’s in his 30’s and divorced, it was his ex’s turn to have the kids and he had nothing planned so he volunteered to go into our yard and do two trailer checks throughout the day, checking the fridges hadn’t stopped/enough fuel in them etc. it took him about three hours and he got paid 12 hours at treble time, so I kinda get it from his pov.
Quite a lot of drivers prefer to work over Christmas, not so much for the bonus as to escape Christmas itself. I used to quite like it, especially if I was being sent to non-Xmas countries in North Africa or the Middle East.

This one that I spotted on the outskirts of Rugby two days ago won’t be home for Christmas.
Used to have to work if my shift came round on Christmas night for the Boxing Day papers back in the 80’s, that was weird but in the days of unlimited wagons the night went pretty quick with nothing on the road, part of the job which you knew when you took the job on.
Only worked one Christmas Day since, probably around '95, rental cars had to be delivered to the airports for Christmas morning, 5 hours work paid a full week wages given the bonus on offer for turning in, you couldn’t turn that down, home by 10am anyway.
went for a walk with the family after our turkey meal, over one walk bridge over the M1 ,down the road then back over the traffic bridge nearby…didn’t see a single lorry…it’s usually teeming with trucks.

the tippers were probably bulk blowers delivering feed onto farms

Would it be a double whammy this year with Christmas day falling in a Sunday?
ie A sunday rate would already be extra,.so surely Christmas day in the mix should put the rate up even more considerably…or am I being a bit naive here, especially knowing how the haulage industry is.

Knowing how the industry is you are lucky to see extra for a sunday, additional for xmas day is a stretch too far. too radical thinking by you there mate.

Aye, I did kinda know, (hence the self naivety crack ) and I ain’t going to get on about the old Union/non Union chesnut,.but I’d have thought there would be wiggle room for a bit of negotiation, but there ya go.
As for no extra on a Sunday,.I can see that maybe happening on a 4 on 4 off pattern (the cynic in me wonders if that was part of the reason for it) but anybody daft enough otherwise to work single time on a Sunday,.(and I just know they will be out there ) frankly deserves it.
