Working over Christmas

When I was single, I was on permanent nights, trunked loads on Christmas Eve, so only got home at 08:00 on Christmas Day, couple hours kip, then round to family.

Also elevated section of M6 at midnight New Year’s Eve, spectacular fireworks show, as most of the domestic fireworks go off at your eye level.

Actually worked millennium Eve, 12 hours at quadruple pay just to make sure none of the fridges went down on the trailers that had been pre-loaded.

I always save at least 8 days holiday for Xmas so I have usually just over two weeks off when you add in statutory holidays, I love having time off at Christmas but wouldn’t blame anyone for doing whatever they want, this year I broke up on the 16th and I’m back on the 2nd, I’ve convinced my boss I still believe in Santa so he can’t really say no  I can’t think of an amount of money that would make me change my mind, Christmas is for family in my eyes and the rest of the year is for earning.

Work as per had Christmas Day off as I do frozen / chilled loads but not that bothered about it never have been have worked many Christmas Day in the past

Harry Monk:
I once drove from Novgorod to Moscow on Christmas Day. It felt a bit strange writing 25/12 on the tachograph card.

I didn’t get paid any extra for it, but I had volunteered to do it and it was just a normal weekday in Russia anyway, they do their Christmas on January 6th. This was before my children were born, and now they are adults I’d probably do it again given the chance.

Truth be told, tomorrow won’t be a “special day” for me, I’m planning to do a short trip to Rose Narrowboats to chuck my rubbish in the skip and empty my chemical toilet down their Elsan drain, then if the weather is favourable I will sand down and paint my roof hatch. For lunch I will probably have a ham and tomato sandwich and a bag of Marmite crisps.

A little jaunt 300 mile
