Some drivers work for companies that treat then like crap, i.e. multiple nights out at no notice, shift patterns changed on a whim, constant chasing on the cabphone etc. Then you have unpleasant customers that treat you like poop, either playing silly mind games, or keeping you hanging around for hours, not even letting you use their facilities, or even sit in your cab or use your phone. Somedays the traffic is so dense, you wonder if you are ever going to get home, whilst rushing around trying to fit in all your drops. All about keeping an open mind though and realising the image of life on the open road, is often detached from the reality.

Only advice if you are a newbie, is to go with an agency to build up your experience and see what types of driving work you like, then seek out that type of work with a permanent employer.

mrginge:
I was even nice enough to give my last agency a weeks notice when leaving for a full time job. My new employer was fine with me starting a week later. The agency had been good to me ever since i got my licence a few years back and i have had a couple of full time jobs in between so i never burn my bridge with them.

Good advice. Always leave on the best terms you can; if the new job don’t work out you may have to go back. Even if you don’t, you’re still going to need a reference for another employer.

Have you still not checked what it says in your employment contract?

only gotta give a months notice but as im a newbie to hgv driving i cant see a company waiting a month for me to start and the fact i dont want to wait a month as death would be more of a pleasent experience than the job im in

You’re not a truck driver yet. You may find that you have that opinion about truck driving within a few weeks/months. The early starts/late finishes and 15hr days don’t sound that bad until you have to do them and not everyone manages to cope with starting or finishing work at midnight to 4am. They also have a view that the job is easy, just chuck a load on the back and drive it to somewhere and unload it. That view usually doesn’t survive the first run as all the experiences we deal with day in, day out suddenly hit the new driver who doesn’t have the ability or experience to handle them without a lot of stress and struggling.

Just been through this scenario. I should have done a month, but I explained to my manager that I could only do 2 weeks and he accepted. Everyone happy.

Swampey2418:
Need to check your contract of employment

You are legally bound by a contract, however it is rarely worth an employer’s time and money to sue if you breach a contract by failing to work out a notice. Of course, they don’t have to pay you for the time if you haven’t worked it.
In these situations most employers will be reasonable if you talk to them and ask if you can leave after 4 weeks rather than at the end of the formal notice period.
If you do leave without working your notice then you risk getting a bad reputation. Depending on what you do, this bad reputation may follow you around and affect your opportunities for future employment.
Finally, you signed the contract and voluntarily accepted the obligation to work per the contract. If you break the contract you are breaking your word, which is to behave in an untrustworthy way and is a morally bad thing to do. Better to to talk to your current employer and see if they will let you leave early. If they say no then speak to your future employer.

+1

@OP I was in the same boat last week. My current employment requires me to give a notice of at least 2 weeks or As much as possible. however, my boss in a meeting 3 months ago (with the whole team) demanded that if anyone wants to leave needs to give him 3 months notice. Every recruitment agent that I spoke to regarding a new job after that said…no company would advertise today and say “sure join us in 3 months”.

So last week Monday, I went to the boss and handed in my notice… its only then he told me…“if you want to leave, I accept your notice, however if you want to leave sooner than your notice, let me know and I will allow it. Because I dont want to keep an unhappy employee…”

So yeah, best thing is speak to your employer…if he isnt flexi… speak to your potential employer.
