No, but if you choose to, it is a lot easier to administer on a declaration basis, rather than repaying against receipts.

so what’s in it for them? if they don’t need to, then why do it?
Does anyone know if they have an age limit to work for Virginia??

Yeah you need to be old enough to hold a C+E licence.
Seriously though, I have no experience of Virginia but what they will be looking for is a competent driver with experience of the type of work they do ie: Irl-UK-European fridge and dry freight. If you’ve got something to offer then give them a call. You’d be surprised how often you can duck under qualifying barriers if you’re in the right place at the right time.

Been on artics since i was 21, I turned 24 last week that’s why I was wondering about the age limit as a few companies want you to be 25 or over. Done a bit of fridge work last year on agency but thats as far as it goes when it comes to chilled and frozen. No harm in giving them a call I suppose, especially if there is 5 jobs going.
You have to be careful when self employed with what you can claim. Certain things can be claimed of course, but if you claim for things you need anyway (food being one of them) the HMRC won’t always allow it. The reasoning being you have to eat whether you’re at home or working…If you’re employed you will be allowed certain expenses. BUT, I feel that the wage ought to be decent as it is - you shouldn’t need expenses in order to make a decent wage.
Tax isn’t simple. It’s why I use an accountant - he’s saved me a fortune.

If as an employer you choose to give a meal allowance to an employee as part of their remuneration package, driver retention etc,by rights you should pay out what they spend, supported by receipts. However if you have a lot of employees getting a meal allowance it can be time consuming to administer the scheme, hence why HMRC allow you to make a declaration and pay a fixed rate, without the need to collect receipts etc.

so you’re basically saying there’s nothing in it for the employer, but obviously if your going to pay for meals then it makes sense to use the fixed rate system.
i don’t see why a company would do something if there’s nothing in it for them.
the employer does benefit quite a bit,
lower holiday pay.
and
lower NI contributions.
Here it is explained better;
del trotter:
seriously I would think Stobbart et others have bigger things to think about than the NI contribution on a £5.00/day.
In a big firms eyes a saving is a saving, over the course of a year that £5 a day mounts up, multiply by however many drivers = decent saving. These big firms dont look at the job anymore, they just look at the figures
