Work Experience - Class 1 Work

Hi,

I’m leaving the Army on Redundancy soon and would like to take up trucking for a living. Only problem is I am lacking in experience in driving Artic’s. I have all my licences which were passed back in 95 but while serving you only really get to drive Rigids or Wagon and Drag. I have driven a few Artic’s in the past on odd jobs but not on a long term basis.

Has anyone heard of any Haulage Firms taking on guys on an ‘unpaid’ Work Experience basis or know any that do? I have been pricing up training providers but it looks like it is going to cost a fortune.

Any Ideas? :bulb:

pm sent

Im pretty certain it will have been pointed out in the PM but…

Don’t work unpaid. You are a skilled professional who is capable of the job and should be paid for the hours put in.

You may be able to find a local trainer to give you a 3-4 hours refresher for 150-200 quid. That should be all you need to improve your confidence.

so, you are saying don’t work unpaid to get a bit of experience, but you are also suggesting that he pay a local trainer for the same time?

is it just me?

Yes I am saying don’t work unpaid. He has already stated he has experience in his military background, therefore working for nothing makes a mockery of that experience.

And the refresher was just a suggestion. No gun was being held to anyone’s head

If you work for free don’t be surprised if you’re taken for a mug because you are one :unamused:

I remember a bloke coming on these forums saying that he had agreed to work cheap to gain experience and 3 years later he was complaining that he was still being paid less than the other drivers doing the same job, if you tell employers that you’re stupid enough to work cheap or for nothing don’t be surprised when they treat you accordingly :unamused:

A friend of mine just passed his Artic test and enquired thru me about getting a job where I work. Understandably my gov’nor has reservations and told us that if he could do 2 weeks unpaid, sitting alongside another driver to see how he gets on, if all goes well he’ll have a job.

Lots of you will say working for nothing is wrong and it is normally, but my gaffer would have to pay 2 lots of wages out of one trucks earnings when it doesn’t require 2 drivers on it. He’ll happily give anyone a chance to prove themselves but not at added expense to the company when there’s actually no need.

It’s up to each individual but if I was a new driver and couldn’t find a job, I’d certainly give it some serious consideration.

I would class this as slightly different … because the “newbie” is getting trained to the new gaffers ways of working … as opposed to being out on his own … with the truck earning money … but working for free … similar to doing paid / unpaid assessments through agencies.

I thought spanky would have been in straight away esp if it involved free labour…
Dont work for nothing matey people will take the pee out of you even though you want to gain experince you are still worth something for a days work !!!

Can see the logic but on the flip side could argue how is he going to prove himself if he isn’t behind the wheel.

End of the day its all down to choice

Think he means the “newbie” would be driving with the experienced driver sitting along-side … least i would hope so :unamused:

That is what i meant. I didnt explain it very well in my original post.

Well, it worked out good! Chuffed to Naafi Breaks!! I got a couple of days experience and the Driver got to get Chauffered around for a couple of days, both parties happy

Half of the things I did wouldn’t have been covered by a Training Provider anyway. When with a training provider do you get to visit working sites and learn the different procedures for said sites?

Thats why I asked for ‘Work Experience’ :bulb: :bulb:

At least now when I get to tip up for a Job I dont look like a complete idiot not knowing what to do.

can’t fault you there mate, does a training provider let you loose with a loaded trailer?

did the fella that let you loose with his motor have a loaded trailer?

did he just go to sleep in the bunk while you drove or did he give you advice if you weren’t sure?

Yeah, fully loaded and empty, handles totally different fully loaded, especially on small roundabouts :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Might even get a job out of it from one of the Depots we visited :sunglasses:
