I was wondering would any truck companys let me do work exp at there garage if they have one like fixing the trucks ect.
I do a mechanic course for 1 day a week so have basic knowlodge.
I know i couldn’t do work exp going in a truck so the closest thing is working on them.
dont know of any near you but scania in haydock was gonna let my younger sister do work experience there on weekends she was 16 at the time but she changed her mind when they told her she would be changing the tyres
Just get on the phone and ask, normally main dealers have a tie up with the local colleges but just ask. The worst they will do is say no.
IMO if you can find an operator not a main dealer you might learn a bit more.
Josh, If there is a reasonably sized Haulage company anywhere near where you live, Phone them up, tell them about yourself, and your aspirations. Ask them if you could come in on Saturday /Sunday mornings, and help out with Washing, and servicing their waggons. You would be doing this under supervision, so the Health and Safety aspect should not be a problem. You never know, they might even pay you.You seem to be a sensible lad, and you are certainly keen. Good Luck. We,ll see how you get on via your posts.
Yeah couple of decent firms with in 5-10 mins from with garages i’ll ring up and enquire.
I have work exp in july for 2 weeks so need to find somehwere before march gotta get my act together.
There is DAF in leyland but i think i would just go to a haulage firm with there own garage or something.
Im in school typing on this atm
Then show this thread to your careers advisor
or print off and show it
Dont have one here.
I’ll ring around a few places and see when i get home.
Round here we’ve got (Huntapac, Harrisons, Johnsons, Baybutts, R & J Wright) few others like.
Josh i take it there is no truck dealer near you. Did you say you had phoned the company’s around your way? if no luck there then try one of the smaller company’s around your way you may get something there good luck mate
I done my work experience at Ralph Davies joshh, not near you i know but other firms would do it i should imagine i got shown how to sweep the work shop make tea and look at ■■■■■ mags that was back 1n 1993 am a expert now well looking at ■■■■■ mags anyway
What are your travel arrangements? Johnsons would be ideal, straight off the train and your there. What about McBurneys in Liverpool?
Some more firms like Ascrofts heavy haulage in Tarleton, TWT/AIG heavy haulage in Burscough, Gary Formby heavy haulage in Burscough, DT Donald, Allan Booth Tankers, Clayton Commercials, all have a garage. Also 3663 has a couple fitters carrying out running repairs.
Most of the dealers are looking for apprentices look around in the manufacturers websites you will see applications for apprentices call them you never know !! you might get into a dealers on a saturday !! Also try the trailer rental companies, or to meet poeople go to your local IRTE meetings
I did one weeks work experience when i was about your age Josh at a haulage company ran by a family friend and it was amazing! I was in the office for most of the week which wasnt too bad but when i was allowed to go out in a truck for the day i was made up. It was a topline aswell so i was in heaven!
I now work for/run/own that company! Its alot smaller than it was a few years ago, we only started off with a van but slowly we are building it back up.
I agree with the above posts about ringing local haulage companies up about cleaning vehicles etc. its a good way to speak to the drivers and boss and also you never know they might let you go out on a few runs with some of the drivers. The mechanic route is a good choice, some of the ‘older’ drivers (no offence intended) have a really good mechanical knowledge because when there were any problems they had to fix them by the roadside.
But stick at it though mate, i know people talk about doom and gloom but most drivers really enjoy their jobs.
Good luck mate.

Im just down the road from tarleton so no problems.
I know theres harrisons/premair, ascrofts, huntapac etc.
Johnsons is 10 mins in car or so
I havn’t phoned anywhere i was seeing the views on here if it would be a chance or a no go go.
Theres no harm in asking about josh! all they can say is yes or no, i was lucky my father had his own garage and he offered me an apprentiship in the commercail side
Personally if it’s a small company I’d go and see them and tell them what you want to do. The personal approach will probably get you further than a phone call.
As for Health and Safety, we had a few work experience bods coming to our place over the years, although most are from the local Agricultural college and have no problem with H & S just have to be checked out by the representative of college or school and not let the use any machine tools.
