OK the road that goes over this bridge once was part of the road that became one of Britains mightiest highways. Where am I.

I wonder when that bridge was last used as the A1? I’m sure the new Elvet Bridge was open the first time I went up there around 1955, later another A1 was built to the West of Durham (Now the A167) and the current A1M to the East was much later…
The current A1M bypassing Darlington was built around 1963, I worked on the plant maintenance site that is now Newton Aycliffe services
Right first time Martin!
Actually the A1 never crossed this bridge although the Great North Road did a very long time ago. The A167 western bypass has been around for longer than most people realise, its 19th century. Although it didn’t have the number then of course

The New Elvet Bridge, which can be seen through the arches in Wolfie’s photo, only dates back to 1975.
The A1 passed Durham to the west via Neville’s Cross and Crossgate Moor before the road was reclassified as the A167 upon the opening of the A1(M) to the east of Durham in the early 70s.
Just out of shot to the right is The Half Moon. Top beer emporium
