Before you withdraw the digi card at the end of your shift, what mode should you switch it to ?
None, as it asks you the next day what time your shift finished when you put your card in, so it’s irrelevant really.
Ken.
Bed, you’re either commuting to bunk
or going home!
Probably other work for a bit for end of day vehicle checks/paperwork etc.
I leave mine in till the last minute so i don’t have to muck about with manual entries too much.
According to advice from the FTA, you should switch it to rest.
Belt and braces really as VOSA guidelines say that they should assume rest starting on completion of shift i.e. withdrawal of card.
Presumably this will eventually be expanded to having us fitted with tags to make sure we really are at home in bed.
With both analogue and digi cards I’ve always put them on rest, before I take them, but for no particular reason except it feels neat in my mind.
Why would it matter?
I’ve heard drivers say they select bed before ejecting card, but surely ejecting a card is other work?
My tacho (new style) asks you if you were on bed since it last ejected, I click yes, but you can do the same with a manual entry, but even if you don’t it records a ? symbol for the time when the card is ejected, ? is normally assumed to be bed mode unless there’s a reason to suspect otherwise
always book off the country first then select break, at the end of the day
mind you I only take mine out at the weekends

Which is why my employer wants us to put it to “bed” mode first. Because there may be doubt. Presumably meaning that I, as the driver, have confirmed that I’m on a rest period rather than a “maybe”. As if I’d got any free time left to do a bit of moonlighting.

It should already be on other work because you’re doing other work such as your final daily walk round check or paperwork prior to the end of the day.
For all those that put it on to bed before ejecting it, do a printout. The bed will not appear as it has to be on that mode for a full minute for it to register.
Just do a manual entry the next day.
“Final daily walk round check”? The only thing I check at the end of the shift is that I’ve remembered to pick up my car keys off the dashboard. Handbrake on, card out, ■■■■ off home. And I’ve never given the slightest thought to what mode I leave it on.
Going home to shag wife mode ! Gotta take it out on someone !

Bed!
If you leave it on other work, when you put the card in the following day,you may well get a warning coming up after a few minutes driving that you need a break as the tacho thinks you’ve been on duty all the time,(notwithstanding that the card was not in).
I think you’ll find any,(Proper),tacho instructor will tell you the same.
Think I’m going to try bed/rest/break mode for two minutes before the card is removed as I can use this time for ER with some light warm down exercises.
Even better it removes the ‘?’ symbol as I always thought bloody ell if the tacho doesn’t know what mode it should be on what chance have i got.
Or maybe POA- no one ever mentions that mode on here

But it never does that to me, and I can’t leave the thing on break all the time I’m not driving it since the day driver uses it. My truck stands still with no card in it for maybe two hours every 24, other than at weekends.
I thought these digital tachos were supposed to be better than the old paper cards? As far as I can see, not only do they eat up driving time when you’re in start/stop traffic, but now I discover that they magically record you doing other work when you’re at home in bed. Weird.
I take my card out then put it on rest, why do people eject there card then do a walk round check etc? Why not leave the card in until you’ve finished all your tasks, surely it’s easier and makes more sense, or is there a reason behind this routine■■?
eject your card on hammers (because you are still working) ,then the next morning do your manual entry to say that you have been on rest from x until y,simple, but probably not for some drivers!
Rest, and then wait a minute for the change to be reflected when you do your print out.

Unneccessarily complicated. I’ve never, ever had an issue with the tacho flashing up “insufficient break” (or whatever) and I’ve never ejected it on anything other than crossed hammers, since that’s what it defaults to. I never do manual entries and I never do print outs.
I think it’s a non issue what mode it’s on when you eject it, and all debate on the subject is like trying to determine how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
