Comedy Gold, all of it.
It is not a daft idea, because I was "told on the train " that a lorry wont start if you don’t put a digital card in the VU, also they stop when you reach 10 hours driving!
Before wireless, there was another system. I was driving my car home from the pub, a copper pulled out after me and stopped me, he said “do you know why I have stopped you?”
No officer, of course not. “You were not wearing a seat belt.” (I was now, because I had seen him) “The light above your mirror on the VOLVO was flashing” he replied
DOH!
sticklicence:
Vosa are close enough to you to tap your number plate into this new system. They are then fronted with all the data from your Digital Tacho for the last 24 hours.Your thoughts please?
Ta!
Ok, its a what if scenario. But why only 24 hours ? I wouldn’t think it would make much difference to the driver, it might save him an uneccesary and inconvinient stop. Some people think we may get it anyway, and maybe they’re right. The security for such systems to prevent unauthorised access to data might prevent further progress with the system though, not due to the technology (its already there)but due to the cost.
Just read on the Siemens web site, that the new Digitachos will have an in cab air quality sensor fitted, specifically at the request of VOSA. this will measure the air inside your cab to tell if anyone has been smoking. there will also be a new fixed penalty offence of “excessive use of the ■■■■ exhaust valve” for those of you who like to ■■■■ loudly in your cab!

That’s me screwed then although I don’t smoke.

Not yet anyway… But:
When you get back to the office and scan your card that info goes off to some place where they check for infringements etc. It would be simple to have the same data sent off to VOSA. That way they would soon have a giant database from which it would be easy to pull out the bad lads (employers and drivers)
What we discard today as pure fantasy, could tommorrow be a reality. Look at the changes made over the last twenty years. Mobile phones, wi-fi, digi cameras, the list grows every day. Nothing is beyond becoming another aspect of our lives.
In the 1960’s, the monster raving looney party campaigned for votes at 18, and pubs opening all day. both came in during the late 70’s. in the late 60’s, captain kirk ran around with a small, hand held communicator not unlike a mobile phone, and remember the tricorder? we use them every day in our supermarkets to scan our purchases. in the film the long good friday it was proposed to turn the east end docklands into high class residential appartments, what happened a few years later?
my prediction for the future?
All children will have a tiny chip inplanted in thier brain at birth. the chip will be connected to a super internet, where they can access every piece of information ever recorded. Thier health will be constantly monitored 24/7, any problems will be cured either by a data transmission over the super internet, or a computer controlled doctor, who will be able to connect directly with the patient. Legs and arms will become extinct because no one wioll move from the birth space, in fact, humans will just be a brain enclosed in a skull!
I hope i’m not around to see it, although scientists do beleive that the first person who will live to be 1000 years old, is already alive!

Is already there, had a young bloke working for me 23 years old, and done everything, been everywhere, and had driven anything, must have had easely 65 years experience.

Tell him you had something on the passenger seat.
OK lets look seriously at this for years some cars have built in phones which can track you down in the event of a breakdown !!! Digi tach with a transmitter coupled to a sat nav could talk to each other your speed and location (ie tracker) 50MPH roadworks truck = 53MPH direct link to VOSA hey presto £60 fine technology is there put it together in new build instant money earner for the government science fact not science fiction BIG BROTHER WATCHING YOU
Anyone had experience of how long it takes to do any sort of VU download using the different options out there?
Even the last 28 days activity with a digidown takes a good 5-10 mins… and as for a full VU download
Maybe the technology will exist one day, but when you compare how long it takes to download a VU of a few kbs of data compared to downloading an MP3 it could well be a while.
I joined Npower on a dual fuel deal and they have sent me a free energy monitor. After connecting it to the meter wirelessly I have spent the day going round turning on and off every appliance I own and watching the needles jumping.
I love gadgets, my electric bill will be horrendous but it was fun to have every light on at the same time while boiling a kettle and running an electric fan, electric iron, and a bath
I am going out tomorrow!

I got the same, but i did it the other way, went round turninng everything off to see what i could save, it’s frightening how much power we use just leaving things on stand by. if your not using something, then turn it off at the power point.
