Winteringham Haulage, Yorkshire

Anyone got any old pictures of this firm?

Originally based in Heckmondwike, then latterly in Birstall where they were based until they closed in 2012.

I was there between 2005 and 2010, starting as a second man and eventually passed my class 1 with them.

Good firm, good lads, good experience… good nights out!

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried flickr, that’s usually a good bet ?
Shame about Winteringham, good old firm, used to see there lads at various docks and backload joints when I was on general, always on flats, trombones & heavy stuff !

They have opened a trailer rental company on the site now

Hi

I worked for Norman back in the mid 80s, a lot of drivers didn’t like him but I thought he was a top bloke to work both for and with.

I was quite sad when they closed up but if your not making money it’s better than going bump.

Used to go with my old man , late 70s, early 80s during the school hols when he worked there. The 1st artic I ever drove was one of his, 1976 MAN 18.232 with a column change 6sp & splitter, I think it was 1 of 3 he bought 2nd hand ex LPG transport. It was in the ■■■■■■■ factory in the north east, Darlington I think, when I was 12 yes old. Did a super smooth change 2nd to 3rd and then made a balls up trying to get it back into 2nd

When I was 14/15 my old man used to let me reverse the trailer into a slot after filling up back at the yard, Norman watched the first few times from a distance and then just let me get on with it to the point that if I was in the yard when some of the drivers came back they used to park up at the pumps and shout over fill us that up and park it up…

I try not to live in the past and by regrets but my only regret in life is not staying at Wints, good lads back then and for all Norman might shout and bawl and throw his flat cap on the floor he was a sound bloke, salt of the earth and a bloody good mechanic.

Patrick

Do you remember Joanne?

More specifically Cemetery Rd, Heckmondwike. I remember them well.
'as it 'appens I was born in Cemetery Rd Heckmondwike…Not a lot of people know that.

Hi Ramone

yes i remember Joanne very well. she hadn’t long been working in the office(portakabin) long before i started. she had a nice…wait for it… manta berlinetta as a company car and i got to use it a couple of times to nip up to Northern Commicals for parts after i passed my test, poor little car

when i read that they had closed down a couple of years ago i called into the office in birstall to see her to ask why they shut the doors, she told me they chose to shut up shop as they weren’t making any money and the Leeds Commercials side of the business was keeping it afloat…

did you work there?

Patrick

so your a Hecky lad Grumpy. did you work for any of the spen valley firms?

Fred Chappell, Batley (best gaffer that ever walked), a short stint down Wormald St. with Harold Wood, 3 weeks (agency) at A1, 25 years at Hargreaves, Liversedge, then back to Chappells who by this time had moved to Ossett. Fred had passed away by this time and Brian Chappell was running the firm.
Oh, and before I got a licence I was a van lad, Harrisons of Dewsbury (5 days a week, Manchester city centre delivery and collection). I get lost if I go to Manchester now, I have to rely on sat. nav. :frowning:

Hargreaves down Leeds Rd? Many happy memories of there as a young un, I had dozens of pics of their motors, EDFs IIRC in the early 80s. Sadly all lost in a very messy (is there any other kind) divorce.

Which leads me to the question in the 1st post, anyone have any pics of early Winteringham Motors? .

Yep, 1960 to 1985. I’ve got a claim to fame…the Swan traffic light just down the road…completely awash with black oil. I’d loaded one of the Mk V AEC’s, off I goes, lights changed to red, I dropped the brakes on and everything went black, I’m told that passers by said it came out of the tank manhole like a fountain…I’d “forgotten” to lock the lid shut.   Stan Holdsworth, the terminal manager, was not impressed when he walked down to view the carnage. :unamused:
