I think this E.R.F. milk tanker had started life with Dairy Crest Transport.
I photographed it on the Malta - Gozo Ferry , about 5 years ago. Not a good photo ,- but its one more for the " Milk Tanker Spotters Club " !!

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

thanks cattle wagon man . …all milk tankers greatfully received !!

I purchased this photograph at a Truck Show a couple of years ago.
There was no name on the reverse, so I am unable to credit the Copyright owner.

For the olderdrivers , the photo location might look familiar. It is of Skelsmergh , onthe A 6, looking south towards Kendal.
I reckon the date would be in the mid-1960s, and the B.M.C. probably belongs to Barnes & Nelson. Their haulage depot was situated a mile further down the road , and the milk would be on its way to the Milk Marketing Board dairy, on the northern edge of Kendal. Just a change to see the earlier collection` driver at work , and no doubt a risky place to stop, - prior to the M 6 motorway opening.

On the right-hand side of the road , is the entrance to Longsleddale valley. This valley was to be origin for the "Postman Pat " children`s stories, written by John Cunliffe. A bit of added information, useful or useless .

BTW, the milk stand is still there, - and intact !! Ahhh,…nostalga…it ain`t what it used to be.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Great pic and I think I got roughly where it is (even though I’m not an “older” driver  )

Trailer-wise: SNAP!

These were liveried by Bibby Distribution to promote Pembrokeshire Cheese made in Haverfordwest cheese factory. There don’t seem to be as many around here now so I assumed some must have been moved away. Some Bibby reload trailers are based adjoining the dairy in Haverfordwest along with farm collection Scanias, whilst there’s a bigger reload place with wash etc at Whitland 15 miles up the road next to the site of the old dairy which closed about 20 years ago. Both yards were Wincanton until about five years ago (IIRC), and Whitland was Tankfreight not that long before - competitive business!

This is me picking one up for a Bibby Subbie at a reload outpost at Carew Pembrokeshire a couple of years back. It would’ve been going to Westbury Dairies.

Dunno whose the Daf’s are in the other pic, do I spy a ■■■■■■■■ livery in the background?

Same subbie, this time more recent and a Bibby livery trailer on CIP at Westbury. Westbury is an interesting place - as I understand it it’s like a cooperative between the main dairy companies set up to deal with surplus, it’s made into powder onsite. Not a bad tip most of the time, however when stuff goes wrong you can be in for a looooong wait! They’re all a bit like that I spose. :unamused:

The catwalk on this trailer dates it! This was just before they went to side-steps only. This was for Wincanton back in the mid-late nineties. This haulier (no longer in business :frowning: ) used to do most trunks from Haverfordwest reload to Marshfield, about 100 miles each way, if you were nifty you could just do 2 in a shift. Marshfield is just one of the sites that have disappeared even in my short time knowing the business (most of which was hobbling anyway!). I used to go to Portsmouth, Cardiff, Bridgend, Ruislip (once!) all gone. I loaded out of Totnes with fridges a couple of times - that’s gone as well IIRC. This haulier did Chard quite often - are they still open?

There was a hell of a difference in road manners at 38 and 40 tonnes compared with nowadays wasn’t there? You could feel the milk slosh like mad then, especially in twin pot tanks, but nowadays a tank loaded with 29000 litres is so near being full to the lids it does’t have much room to move.
