Wiltshire police have decided to do what the police in the north have done[can’t remember which force]they have decided to do a money making scheme like the others,sending out undercover bill on pushbikes with cameras on the handlebars to film how close vehicles get ,they are targeting all drivers,the worse thing is one of the sargeants said basically that we drivers need educating in not getting close to cyclists,i understand that and he went on to say that if a cyclist hits a pothole and gets thrown off his/her bike they need room,fair enough but we all know that no matter how much room you give them if they get thrown off they could go either way,you are trying to give them room say by being on the other side of the road[providing it’s safe to overtake]that’s maybe 8 or 9 ft but being thrown off their bike could send them that distance with the momentum and they could still end up under some vehicles wheels,so even if you are trying to do the right thing you still end up possibly killing the cyclist,and we all know who will get the blame because the councils can’t fill the pot holes and police allways like blaming drivers,the thing that really annoys me is it’s allways the driver who needs educating,never the cyclist
I always try and use the other side of the carriageway to pass cyclists. That way there is no if’s or buts as its all there recorded on dash cam. At the end of the day though, you already look like a plonker dressed up like a Lycra johnny, you don’t need to be blown into the hedge as well!
