William Kirk Macclesfield Ltd

Noticed one of their trucks delivering to a garden centre near me , and have always admired the fleet but know nothing about the company , is there anyone out there with photos , history , and interesting information .

I know they’ve been going some years.
When I started UK tramping in the early '70’s, their drivers used to stay in the same digs as myself in Exeter, good old days.

Back in 1981 I was on a Rolls diesel course at Shrewsbury and the son (or one of them?) of Kirks was there as well. Seemed a decent enough set up they had and he was a pleasant enough chap. That was 33 years ago though…

Pete.

On and off I did around 10 years with them. Fleet isn’t what it was! Now only factory white units with crap stickers instead of proper sign writing. Was sold last year to some asset stripping, sorry, management company that also have a hand in Bay Freight and some company in Colchester I believe.

It was an ERF stronghold at one time, now I see Renaults and Volvo.
Used to bump into one of their drivers in Northampton and Bethnal Green,
John I think but everyone called him Bugsy.

Do they still have ERFs?

I use to tramp for them in a trusty ERF olympic. Happy day’s!!!

Look like Volvo’s certainly.

Here’s their website wkirks.co.uk/

Worked for them for about 12 months not a bad firm, money’s not the best but good bunch of lads the drivers.
