Why the [zb] should i leave an industry that has been spoiled by can’t do won’t do brain dead steering wheel attendants hell bent on ruining the job.
Because you’ll have no choice. You’ll be forced out the industry because everyone else will have moved on. The “Stobart” way with drivers driving clean vehicles, having a shave and wearing a uniform is the way the world is going. You are expected to not only be professional in the job you do but look it too.
Haulage companies want drivers that won’t be an embarrassment to them when they arrive at a customer. You are an embarrassment.
You’re still living in the 70’s. Just being able to drive from A to B without losing the load is no longer enough. The rest of the world has moved on and you’re a dinosaur in a digital age.

just look at some threads where driver’s was wereing there suits with a collar and tie. there was no driver’s suits to buy.

Hiya did you know that Gulf oil’s had drivers in a smarter uniforms than Stobart’s ever had in the mid 60’s
the wages was maybe 3 times more in comparison and the pension scheme…i dare not say…so now
the electronic /digital age it wasn’t invented or Gulf would have had it in the 60’s. Now tell me about this
Stobart’s getting load’s from AtoB, because just lateley i’ve seen a few Stobart’s going nowhere eccept
on the back of a wrecker

The other night I arrived at my delivery around 0300. It was [zb]ing freezing. Normal procedure is to stand in a little box painted on the floor whilst they tip you.
Speaking as someone who has had many a “discussion” with the most ■■■■ retentive H&S freaks that ever walk the planet or building sites i would ask …how in the name of all that is holy does a painted box protect one from a Polish FLT driver who thinks his FL is a Bugatti Veron .Surely the safest way to protect a driver during unloading is to insist he remains in his cab where he is six floor off the floor and inside a steel box
Conor:
Because they’ve moved on from being a knuckle dragging neanderthal driver who climbs out of his cab in his best greasy rags and rigger boots grunting at all who he meets because that is about as much as his pea sized brain can muster.

These are a couple of quotes that I suspect have come from some-one who has definitely never experienced the freedom to get on with the job as he sees fit or to use his initiative when necessary to get it done. I suspect you …likes many many others…are led by the hand in everything you do.
Pity really, you don’t know what you have missed as the job was so much better then, but, so much so for the modern “Steering-wheel attendant” of todays industry. IMHO of course.
BTW I’d love to have seen some-one wearing a clean neat uniform, collar and tie, sheeting and roping in the wind/rain/snow without gloves back in the day. He’d have ended looking just as you’ve described. What a sight that would have been.
Yes but the Solly, when did you last see a driver roping and sheeting on general haulage?
As a side note i remember a few drivers who were of the older generation wearing shirts and ties in the 70’s and 80’s because they came from the generation where wearing such items of clothing were the norm.
Something people always miss is the older generation were saying the same thing in 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960 ad infinitum. It was always ‘better in the old days’ and in 2030, 2040 etc some of the young lads on this forum will be saying exactly what the old boys are now. Its just life.
Yes Jase I agree with you and take your point.
Way back then '60-70s I knew a couple of tipper drivers and a low loader driver who wore collar and tie. Looked good but not appropriate for the work they were doing. But yes to some it was the norm.
Whoa! Nearly forgot, at that time and before a relative was a fitter and turner in a very dirty job. He wore a collar and tie cos it was his norm.
True. Very true, but back then drivers were left to their own devices to get the job done. They were not led by the hand which appears to be the case today. And don’t forget, all that experience is being forced out of the industry. and is being replaced by technology that is no substitute for experience and common sense.
Absolutely - the ol’ boys on them steam wagons, Sentinels and Fodens, that was proper haulage, bobbies on bicycles coming alongside and pulling you for speeding, throwing yourself through the ice into a pond for a wash and getting out from underneath a bit of tarpaulin at 3.30 am looking for sticks to light the fire. And the boss stopping you threepence farthing per week because you had the wagon with the roof over the cab. Waving to kiddies standing at the garden fence as you go by completely ruining Mothers washing that was hung out.
Yes, those were the days, where a lot of blokes croaked in their fifies from bad working conditions.
Todays rules and regs - maybe something to do with bosses and drivers playing fast and loose “back in the day”?
I knew of a haulier who used to remove brake components on the lead axle of a tri because “it saves money and they’re not needed anyway” Tis true Used to put the gear back at test time.
Trucks are (overall) faster and heavier these days, they can power up hills and maintain a good rate of progress, life moves on.
Sticking the Daily Mirror to your unheated cab windscreen may have been the norm but if there had for instance been a nice comfy Space Cab parked alongside, there would have been no contest.
When I first rode motorcyles you didn’t have to wear a lid and we all moaned like f when it became law. but we know now it makes sense.

Is because you didn’t want to get cold really a good reason??
Absolutley. It’s a much better reason than just not wanting to put a hat on, that’s for sure. You can’t really compare standing still for 30 minutes in sub-zero temperatures to using your arm once in order to lift a hat onto your head.

We’ve got documented examples on here that tilts and flats are still in use which is close enough to the same job which I was doing during the 1980’s and in which jeans and decent boots and a comfortable shirt was and still is good enough.Which just leaves the issue of speed limited trucks together with all the other bs rules now compared to then.
