Depends on your relationship with the company I have never sacked anybody for a problem at home ie kids wife or the alike are you owed holiday or take it unpaid leave
He would have to be pretty harsh to sack you over that. play on the upset bit not stable enough to carry out your duty .

It sounds plausible singing it to the tune of “he’s getting married in the morning”

If it were me mate, i couldn’t give a [zb]! Family come first and always will and I include my dog in that, she’s my bloody world so i wouldn’t care. If your boss fires you because of that, then he’s a piece of crap anyway, but good luck!
If he’s worth one one-iota, you’l still have a job when you get back.
I hope theres no chance he’l see this thread??Just to add, there’s no way i could go to work in those circumstances either.

When you originally spoke to him regarding your situation you should have cried down the phone, men just don’t have the ability to cope with other men crying
You may feel that your boss isnt fair…it sounds like a small firm but they should have some sort of cover themselves for emergencys…but theres allways someone who’s knocking time they have 6 grandmas 38 uncles etc all snuffed it this year , yeh thats reality at some firms…they hear it all, just be honest up front it mite not be what the boss likes but at least you know it wasnt for nothing, some people dont have any affection for pets, we do ! sorry to hear about your faithfull friend, good luck with your boss.
IMHO a boss who isn’t concerned with an employees’ domestic problems probably isn’t that concerned about your welfare at work.

I agree, a guy where I work had his mrs top herself about 12 months ago, he wasn’t alowed to be left “unacompanied” at work (railway!) for some time afterwards. My firm is pretty good when it comes to domestic problems, etc. You’l get all the support you need if you need it. Your still just a bloody number on a pay slip though IMO

I have no idea! He was a rescue at the age of about 18 months and lost him about 11 years later, everyone who met him suggested a different mix!
It was the most laid back dog I have ever known, I had a friend who’s 2 daughters used to dress him up with bows and hair clips and walk him around the house! When I was a paramedic he’d sometimes come to work with me, if I was working from home (I was on the response cars) he knew the sound of the pager/radio selcall and would come in from the garden straight away so I could head off on the call.
If on the rare occasions I had to work a night shift and it was raining when I got home in the morning I’ve known him go 20+ hours without a pee!
One evening I was working from home and had taken him out for a walk and ended up further away from the house than maybe I should. I of course got a call, to an RTA on the M25, so I put him in the car as it was closer and quicker. The job was a fairly big one and a senior ambulance officer was on scene and for some reason moved/was in my response car, fortunately he was one of the old school as he came up to me and said “I trust you know that there is a dog asleep on the back seat of your car?”
Even now I expect to see him at home, on the sofa or sitting up when I get back to the car. I could spend hours typing up memories…

Agreed. Inside a bun with onion and ketchup yom yom.
Spoken as a man who is not comfortable around dogs due to an episode when a boy. Don’t wish any dog harm but prefer cats, at least you know they regard you as staff and not masters.
Have we had an answer yet?
Why couldn’t your boss cover your absence?
What if you’d fallen and broken your leg? Would he still have expected you to turn up and drive an artic? What if you and one of the other drivers went to the football and had an accident and were both in hospital a few hours before you were due to start work? Etc. Etc. Etc…what would he do then?
He clearly runs a poorly organised business as there are any number of genuine reasons you can’t make it in to work.
Including having to have the dog put to sleep.
Yes, a driver not turning up is inconvenient. But to have no plan B as a pro haulier is pathetic. If he sacks you I would contest it. Your grounds for not driving were because you were in no fit state to after an upsetting experience and you were concerned about safety. He should kick your arse and then business as usual.
On the other hand, if he sacks you for that, he a complete ■■■■ and you’re well out of it.
