Width limit

I’ve got a drop tomorrow to a farm looked at maps and this looks like the only safe way in. Can I be fined for going past.

Thats assuming you can GET past, phone the farmer and ask him the best way in or will you just drive up to the restriction and then sit and ponder about it?

I always ring the farmer a hour before to confirm route.

Depends if its a general ‘except for access’ restriction, or is there a narrow bridge or possibly width restricting posts down the road where you cannot pass or turn around.

I’ve gone on street view all the way to the entrance of farm cant see any narrow points road wide enough no bridges

Id.phone and ask if possible. As best to ask rather then go then find there is a width limit and your then stuck.

Ages ago I had a delivery to some farm similar to you.
I rang asked where 6ft6 limit was. He said there isn’t one.
Asked why the sign.
and he said o there’s some huge houses down the road residents have complained. About traffic using the lane as a shortcut so they put up the sign to deter traffic

The sign is…

Obscured by foliage in the picture. I’ll assume the limit is 1 maybe 2 miles form the sign possibly less. Hopefully your delivery is inside the limit allowed.

It’s all very well a farmer saying that’s the best way in but, it doesn’t mean you can break the law. Technically, if you go through the limit you fall foul of the law.

Did you see an end of width limit sign or something along those lines on that virtual drive?, indicating access from the other end is preferred and in their terms legal, if you passed no end of width limit signs its difficult to see how you could access the farm except by helicopter.

This is hardly all writ in stone like the London Boroughs system, before the days of google maps you’d have to make a judgement based on what the best maps available at the time would tell you, ringing the farmer was unlikely to bear fruit as the only phone would have been a landline and he’d be out working the farm anyway.

No end of width restriction and access the other way is all tiny lanes a small van will struggle. I’ve got 3 farms tomorrow and there all inside weight or width restriction. The first 1 is inside a 7.5 ton accept for abnormal loads.

This is Stodmarsh rd near Canterbury isn’t it? a long and twisty narrow rd. Much of this whole area along the Stour valley is covered by width or weight limits and is totally unsuitable for artics. I suggest you get someone to ring Salvatoris Transport at Aylesham for advice about access to the address. You do NOT want to try accessing from the A28 at Fordwich. So many companies order goods without a second thought about the size of vehicle it will be put on for delivery. Much of the time sheer greed results in it being put on an artic rather than several smaller vehicles.

Simple answer is yes technically you can be fined. It’s a red circle so it’s a prohibition and your vehicle is over the width that is allowed passed that sign, and there are no except for access exceptions displayed which means you can’t go. If you pass that sign and get stuck and block the road until a crane comes and lifts you out then it will be your bosses insurance company covering the cost and the police will happily fine you as the driver as you’ve past a sign you shouldn’t have.

On the other hand, if you are able to get down the road and your delivery is down there then I doubt any copper would bother with it.

I’d definitely find out if I could actually get down there and try and take more than the farmers word for that. Ie have any drivers been you can ask? Farmers can have a habit of lying because it’s not them getting stuck and not them getting fined, and the want the goods your delivering or want their stuff collecting.

phone the farmers to confirm, bearing in mind they are greedy gits and just want the delivery with no effort from their side.
the sign says “you must not pass”,so dont as the blame lies with you for any grief.
if no result, confirm with your office that your not delivering.
toodle round the drops, take pics of the signs, bring the lot back.
or get on with it and wait for the inevitable carnage, insurance claims and fines to follow.

That is an advanced warning sign for a width limit there is a road off that one with another sign that says its 6"6 in 3/4 mile ahead. Road is Moat Lane also looks like residents have stuck a no hgv sign up aswell.

That road was the only weigh into the farm and was a lot wider than the farm before

Rubbish - it’s an advance warning of a width restriction some distance ahead. No offence is committed by driving past it in a vehicle over the stated width.

No it does not - it’s an advance warning of such a restriction some distance ahead. The actual restriction is in the village of Fordwych, which is a turning off the road indicated.

Where exactly is the delivery point? From the A257 turning you are good for a couple of miles, I regularly pass agricultural vehicles & class 2’s along there. Stodmarsh Rd can also be accessed from the Grove Ferry Rd, by turning off the A28 at Upstreet.

Was going to say the same : the limit is one and a half miles down the road, this is the sign coming from Canterbury

google.fr/maps/@51.2783501, … 312!8i6656

But this is the sign if you’re coming from Sandwich , doesn’t look promising does it

I used to do a delivery to a farm complex with a full load of sawn timber from France, that was about 5 miles down a tight country lane.
We had a number to call so that the farmer could give us the all clear ensuring that there was nothing coming the other way. either from his estate or the village further along the lane.
There were passing places but only big enough for cars.

I’m with lots of others, phone the farm first

Edited to add:

Just done a street view up Stodmarsh Road for you, the width limit is for Moat Lane, which is a turning off to the left of Stodmarsh Road,

google.fr/maps/@51.2867456, … 312!8i6656

so unless you’re going up there, no fine

Stodmarsh road itself does seem to get tight after that but its doable, as long as nothing is coming the other way.
As said depends where the farm you’re delivering to is actually situated

There is an 18tonne limit on Grove Ferry rd. This road has been restricted for years because of the river bridge.
