Wide loads, parking services

Quick question.

I have been told that if driving a wide load, 3.5mtrs wide and park at a services (while waiting for access to delivery) that I don’t have to pay parking charge over 2hrs.

Told by another driver, so wanted to check if anyone on here knows?

I see what you’re getting at but why would a commercial enterprise (the services) not try and make money from you because you haven’t planned your journey / pre-notified your delivery points of an accurate eta?
Sounds like RDC waiting room BS.

We used to get away with it years ago before private escorts became the norm, when the attend came round for his money you used to just say

" the police have parked me in here" it was usually enough to see them on there way and i dont think i.ve ever paid after giving them that line

But you wouldn’t see an attendant today. It’s all done by ANPR.
Yet another situation where ‘computer says no’

It could be a rule of the road that MSA’s must provide a suitable holding area for wide loads. You could always give the head office or the highways agency a ring. Google is your friend

Many thanks for the replies.

The reason for the wait was because of a delay with 3 loads beforehand and offloading by crane.

Was in services for around 2.5 hrs, so will wait and see what comes of it, but company have thrown the parking fines / demands for payment / invoices in bin every other time before

2 Hrs free anything over that you takes your chance.

That’s the answer you will get as that was the answer another AB load driver recieved when he asked.
It’s irrelevant now you’ve just posted you’ve anyway done it, it’s already happened.

The new SRN policy came out at lunchtime today.

Roadside facility policy is near the back, 2 hours for ALL vehicles hasn’t changed.

Just out of interest which services? Some are keener than others.

It was Washington north bound, moto one from memory

A police escorted load , while waiting for ■■■■■■- they cant charge, It is part of their lease that they provide suitable ab load holding areas, non police escorted your just another truck and liable to pay like all the rest

I can’t think of any of their leases that say that.

It is a requirement they have an abnormal load bay area marked out (not saying they all have) unless they gain a departure from policy but as for not charging I think that is a fairy tale and was ‘unofficial’ which is less likely to happen with the onset of anpr parking compliance rather than a ‘man in a van’ parking attendant.

Not true.

if you have a movement order then you are entitled to free parking at any services on your route. I’ve just spent the best part of the last 3 years taking ab loads both wide and long into London and I have never had to pay at any services. Just take your movement order into the shop or cafe tell them your an ab load, show movement order job done.

sometimes you will have to ask for the manager to sort it. A couple of times it wasn’t sorted we got invoices through, emailed movement order through to parking company job done.

I have parked for free in these services with no problem as long as you tell them, leigh delamare, Membury, reading, clackett, South Mimms, Cobham

All true.

so long as u got a movement order and show it to the people in the services and say u have to park there because u have no other option as u can not leave ur route.they can not charge u at all.i did portakabins the other week from lingfield up to newcastle got there in my time.one other guy who load a couple hours after i left parked up at ferrybrigde services showed his movement order to staff and they checked it off without having to pay at all.stand ur ground if they say u have to pay tell u do not thats how its been.i even parked up on birch on M62 with a 80ft long 4.2m wide load the attendent came oevr dont worry u do not have to pay at all on any services in uk as u have the right more than others to park there.

You lads that do wide loads how often do you get problems with trucks parking in the wide load bays? It amazes me that the truck park cam be empty yet people will still park in them.

Rownhams services is pain with container trucks in the wide load bay, as its the near to McDonald’s and the lazy folk can not be bothered to walk from the truck park for a burger. So they just park and leave their trucks in the wide load bay and leave us to drive our often in pairs STGO 3 loads into the truck park.

Where two of our trucks take up six spaces, so we become not through our fault a problem, just because of selfish, lazy drivers.

Talking of lazy drivers the other day it amazed me to see how many drivers park along the back of the front row in Lymm despite there being plenty of space, it was middle of day and they were just stopping for a break yet they just cant be arsed to walk an extra 50 feet! So god knows how wide loads ever get parked with drivers like that around.

That’s fair enough, but there is (both South and North bound) wide load parking areas on the A34 close to the Hants/Oxon border, with Chiverly services just a little further North.
