What is the speed limit when carrying a load over 4.5m wide on the motorway or on a dual carriageway?
I have just done the mock theory exam practice on the DVSA website and the correct answer to the max speed on a motorway is shown as 40mph however the online mock theory exam practice given as part of my training package gives the max speed as 30mph on a motorway and 25mph on dual carriageway - is 30mph or 40mph the correct answer for the max’ speed of wide loads on a motorway?
Did the wide load speed change at the same time they changed the national speed limits?
Theory test tomorrow - not sure which is the right answer now!
I am not aware that the speed limits for wide loads have increased and can see no logical reason why they would. I stand to be corrected but, according to the research I’ve done, the changes apply to single and dual carriageways.
I would stick to 30, 25, 20 as in the training material. It’s not unheard of for the test to be inaccurate. Even if you get a question on this “wrong”, chances are you’ll still pass.
All the very best with it, Pete

Thanks Pete
Just struck me as odd as it was given as 40mph on the DVSA website which I arrived at by following a link from gov.uk

Hi the maximum speed is 40mph as you are under stgo regulations
There’s a snag here somewhere. The STGO regs clearly give you 40 mph on a motorway whereas all the training material I’ve ever seen gives you 30 mph.
I’m not an expert on abnormal loads so I wont comment further except to say that I would answer “40” in the light of this info - and thanks to Angus25.

OK to add to the confusion I have just looked at the STGO regs shown here transportsfriend.org/abnorma … ction.html - which if you scroll down to the table it shows the speed as 30, 25 and 20mph for loads over 4.3m
I hope it’s not one of the questions - or if it is it gives you a ‘just depends who you ask’ as an option
Hmm does it depend on the gross weight?

It will depend on weight but a lot of loads being that wide are porta cabins ect so weight is not much of a problem
