Why are agency drivers referred to as “limpers”?

why■■?..look at them…talk about asking silly questions■■? :unamused:

I think this may have something to do with my recent topic, so please let me explain.

We have had a few limpers, some good, most bad. When the planets aligned at the high tide, our current limper ( he really did have a limp) was offered a full time position. He took this opportunity and proved to be a valuable member (calm down Dipper) of the team. Not only did he arrive early every day, he completed his work without any damage, had a smile and often bought a brew for his new found friends.

It became obvious that this fellow was fitting in a little too well, his truck had a built in bluetooth, he had a canvas holdall, he could afford medication and his limp got better. He still used his vis vest as a signal to his past, but he placed it around the passenger seat to give the impression that he was the main driver and the agency guy was in the passenger seat getting some tuition  It fooled you from a distance.

So we full timers had a meeting and decided that we needed to be able to identify him from across the yard. The details above will prove that he blended in when in a crowd, so we came up with the idea of putting a stone in his work boots (just in one) and this caused a minor impairment to the way he walked. It was barely noticeable to the driver as he had spent many years with the condition, but we all had a way of finding him when he was approaching.

Simple ideas are always the best.

^^^^ genius.

Yeh, but did you remember to fix his seat to prevent him adapting the ADP (agency driver position)
Where they have the seat set to it’s most forward point, back rest facing forward slightly so their nose is about 6’’ from the windscreen, and until they have to clasp the wheel at the strict ‘10 to 2 grip’ (to stop them sliding forward off the seat)
To get the full effect it is accompanied with the old …‘‘hi viz when driving’’ agency trademark, but at least he has knocked that on the head from what you say.

Haha!! Good observation Rob.

Have you seen them driving an Actros? May as well cut a hole in the roof to pop their heads out of.

I call them " Wacky Racer’s " (Stop the pigeon).

When I first got my Actros I hated the driving position.
I came off a DAF which was completely different. I like to lounge you see when driving, …seat right back, pinned down, back rest back…adapting the ‘‘Cool mysterious trucker stylee’’ hiding behind my pulled forward tassled curtains with my Raybans on :sunglasses: (or alternatively known by others as the ‘‘knobhead stylee’’  )

I still have the seat pinned down and backrest back on the Actros, but it took me ■■■■ ages to get used to it, but I still do not look as ridiculous (imo  ) as some Actros men that you mention.

Jealousy normally. It really grinds the regular drivers gears that someone else is doing the same job and getting paid more money as well as paying less tax.

(Although I have seen 1 limping agency driver along with a bag for life.)

When did having a bit of banter become such a problem in the workplace?
It seems everybody has become so sensitive to how they are addressed, if it’s good fun really whats the problem?

When it ceased to become that and became abusive as it did quite some time ago on this forum. Its no longer become good fun and is used by some on this forum to demean those they perceive to be below them just because they do agency work rather than permanent.

I used to find it funny for the first 6 months, then it became tiresome and finally just outright rude. You can only call someone a knob and them take it in a humourous fashion for so long. Demeaning, abusive remarks about agency drivers have been going on on this forum for several years and its got old and tired.

And you respect these peoples opinions so much that them using Agency as an insult annoys you?

Thing is Conor it will only perpetuate as long as you continue to display your displeasure of the subject, it’s human nature.

As I said, I have a light hearted go at you guys, especially my best mate who is a classic stereotype Agency driver (I make no secret of hating ■■■■ agencies for what they have done to the industry, but I have no problem with the drivers) but I can also see the funny side at some of the stuff I do that has attracted ridicule and banter on here in the past, but I just carry on the crack in the same way, my previous post for example.

If anybody has a pop at me on here, my retort is as lghthearted or as malicious as what is aimed at me, it’s getting the balance right. Just today somebody on here jokingly asked for a pic of my daughter, I know he was being light hearted, but Protective Dad mode kicked in and I bit.
It aint worth ■■■■ bothering about mate tbh, it’s a Trucker’s forum,…It aint real life. :bulb:

btw. Admit that does sound patronising but not my intention.

Thats a fair point Conor, although your no stranger to giving as good as you get and in some cases worse there is a very fine line between banter and bullying in this medium. Things can be made worse if it turns into a pile on with multiple id’s attacking one concept I.e. limpers.

Often though the intent to be abusive isnt present and emotions are projected by the reader onto the post they are reading. Some writers are skilled at envoking this. Some less so, some obviously so. Although the folks most offensive to me are the easily offended its often showing weakness that can attract unwanted attention. Especislly if the perpetrator of the crybaby attitude is well known to have little tolerence themselves for others and have tried and failed on numerous occasions to be aggresive.

I do have to temper my replies on these threads somewhat though as conor you are well known as an old hand at agency work and a very knowledgeable poster in certain areas. The phrase King of Agency folk has been used a few times in your direction and im sure many new drivers just starting out in agency work limp up to you and can only aspire to have such a degree of dodgy tracking.

On my part its all just banter but I will back out of a discussion (not blindside though) if it appears to be just an excuse for a pile on.
A lot of my posts dont make the final edit as I reread them and ask myself am I just typing this to get a rise out of someone, and not in the rude way.

Conor grow up for [zb] sake, you are quick to tell someone they are an idiot for not knowing a piece of the regulations, yet you are an incredibly delicate little flower when it comes to an agency man being called a scum of the earth limper… Chill out a bit, you might have a heart attack a bit later

Suprised there are any Limpers on here today, don’t they all do supermarket work for £80ph on weekends, because it’s suits there lifestyle to work weekends so they can run their multi million pound business during the week only doing driving to keep their hands in,not because they need the money…or have I been told porkies by the great unemployable■■? :open_mouth: :sunglasses: :smiling_imp:

  Yeh and then there’s old Truckbling (and his alias they are ‘‘both’’ agency men you know  ) sat in his bed from what he tells us …on for double time on a Sunday :open_mouth: …what a life eh?

Why are agency drivers referred to as “limpers”?

It’s because they all boast about how big their pay packets are compared to employed drivers and the resulting sitting on a bulging wallet gives them problems when they get out the cab again.

I did agency back in 2002. Stayed with them for three years. They kept me busy. I think throughout that time I only went about four days with no work.

For the bone head, sunglasses in the dark, rigger booted, won’t use the hard shoulder on a smart motorway, don’t do hanball , won’t let a driver back in after he’s pulled into lane two, oh and the wheel pi££ers: what is your problem with agency drivers?

An agency driver is doing the work that suits his or her needs. He works when it suits him. He’s not confined to the same job day in day out( unless he’s on a long term contract). He or she have total flexibility over their shifts( within reason). They are in control of their working hours and can manage their lives to suit themselves. Instead of being abused bysome ex driver who’s become “transport planner” and is riding high in the office, forgetting what difficulties drivers face. So you see the agency “limper” and I resent using that term, is quite possibly having the last laugh at the bone head hogging the middle lane because of the bone heads mate" neanderthal", failing to ease off the gas for a second so that bone head can pass.

To any newbie driver don’t pay too much attention to bone head and Neanderthal.

Agency…

I feel the Agency drivers who are biting “Doth protest to much” because if you were comfortable with your life style why would you care what others say?
Some of you people really need to stop taking your self so seriously. :open_mouth:

I’ve been working in Tunbridge Wells for the last 5 years, and being from Norfolk I must have heard every, 6 finger, webbed feet, inbred, joke there is. Do I care? Of course not, because for all the jibes, I pay fraction of the price they pay in Tunbridge Wells for (what I think) is a far better quality of life.

And I’ve done agency driving now and then.
