Why won't they move over?

Not only car drivers.
How many times have you sat behind a truck on a single carriageway at 40. coz its the limit, and as soon as they hit the dual, 50 limit, then there up on the limiter

I had one of these last week on the A47. Another thing that annoys me is truck drivers that see me indicate to overtake a slower one and immediately start overtaking me, and prevent me from pulling out.

Perhaps they are better at reading the road ?

Glad I’m not the only one who suffers from ‘hovering’ as I call it, where you get a car in lane 2 that despite it being clear ahead and in lane 3 will sit alongside and won’t overtake, until you come up against a slower vehicle and they block you in. I can’t understand why, you see them approaching in your mirrors and as they come alongside they seem to slow down so they’re almost crawling past, once they get past your cab they take off again WTF!?!?! :open_mouth:

I’m shamed to admit a couple of times when coming up to junctions or slower vehicles where I need to get over i have had to ‘force the issue’ despite having my indicator on well in advance, even at night when my indicator is clearly blinding their passenger

That’ll be me doing 40 mph on a single carriageway ( well about 42 actually ) sorry about that.

On the other hand they may just be ignorant lorry drivers, there are one or two about.

Because they haven’t seen your indicator, they don’t look further than the end of their bonnet.

Apparently this is recognised as “Cricket Pitch Vision” and usually effects drivers (usually car drivers) who are not used to driving for any real distance on long multi lane carriage ways.

Dumbed down drivers for dumbed down roads. The only way to teach the zb’s to drive properly is to remove all speed limits from motorways and make them pass the test having shown that they can drive safely at not less than 150 mph. :bulb: :open_mouth:

It was only a matter of time :unamused:

If I didn’t know better i’d say you were joking

Absolutely serious I got the idea from the Jezza Clarkson school of motoring. :open_mouth:

Not just recently - observed the same behaviour the last 20 years.

Mind you, they’re probably drivers who have taken 4+ attempts to pass a basic driving test.

Me thinks indicators should be an option on the list when buying a new car, and they have automatic headlights on a lot of cars nowadays I also think this should be extended to front and rear fog lights, especially the rears, and do away with the switches for these lights all together!! This would prevent the muppets who insist on driving with them on when conditions dictate there use unnecessary!! And another idea would be to fit some kind of sensor to CAR headlights to prevent them being driven on high beam with other vehicles coming towards them, which seems to the rave nowadays, really ■■■■■■ me off!! :grimacing:

I imagine there are a fair few car drivers out there who are nervous enough driving in the middle lane, never mind using lane 3.

All in all, it all comes down to a general lack of motorway confidence and/or motorway driving know-how from a lot of car drivers. Something else that is apparant to me is that many seem to think that slip road traffic has right of way which has caused a few hairy moments for me. PassPlus should be compulsory before you can drive on a motorway imo.

Must admit though, despite all the complaints we get about overtaking on two lane roads I do find it quite amazing sometimes how often somebody will flash you out, followed by me thinking “you’ll regret that” .

Apparently this is recognised as “Cricket Pitch Vision” and usually effects drivers (usually car drivers) who are not used to driving for any real distance on long multi lane carriage ways.

This is where, after driving for a certain amount of time on a motorway / dual carriage way,the drivers vision and distal awareness naturally relaxes to about the length of a cricket pitch. The brain does not register anything approaching the perimeter of this field of vision until it crosses the brains “boundary”, waking up the driver and then causing them to react.

This is why you see people approaching the rear of a large vehicle in front of them and we think “they haven’t seen him!!” and then sure enough, at the last minute they react, maybe dab the brakes or flick the indicator on then realise they have no where to go!! They really haven’t “seen” the vehicle!!

The same applies when you want to overtake the vehicle in front of you. You indicate in good time your intention / need to move out into lane 2 but the car already approaching in lane 2 shows no sign of having seen you and so trundles on until suddenly you encroach into their field of “Cricket Pitch Vision” and then they react, usually to late, thus causing you to loose your speed advantage and be unable to complete the overtake or they brake heavily blaming you for wanting to pull out in front of them or worse case scenario, swerve into lane 3 in panic thus causing further mayhem. The reason later given being that they didn’t see you, you didn’t indicate until the last minute etc etc.

In reality they had slipped into the “Cricket Pitch Vision” state and were simply not aware of you even being there!!

oh. I was always under the impression that it was because they drove with their finger up their arse!!!

i’ll be honest, i can see why car drivers cause the majority of car vs truck incdents

I will never pull out on someone but if there is nothing in lane 3 I’ll just proceed to pull out, then they will ease off or break THEN overtake. It’s got to the point where if there is a group of them in my mirror that I know will block me in by the time I catch up to the lorry in front I’ll pull out way before just to keep them behind me.
Completely agree with the above posts about them not looking beyond their bonnet, shocking really.

Thats what I do, sometimes it can make you look a bit stupid, but at least you give the morons behind thinking time to decide if they want to move to lane 3 or not.

What really gets my goat is the idiot that sits in lane 1 at 50mph until you move out to overtake, then he/she speeds up to the same speed as you keeping you out there. Then when you back off and pull back in behind them they slow back down to 50 etc… :smiling_imp:

Now that really is annoying. I had to come to a stop on the M4 once due to lane 1 being coned off and a slightly prolonged case of the above with a wally - there was nothing in the outer lane. He must have seen me so there’s no “cricket pitch vision”. If they’re not deliberately trying to keep you in your lane then what is the explanation?

spinal monginess

I wonder when they will learn not to sit beside a lorry that has a cz, pl, ro, sk, or a h on the number plate?

Yes indeed, formating on a left-■■■■■■, particularly stupid. Maintain that safety bubble!
