Why O Why

You arrive at your drop point and they make you wait then they put you on a bay, then they tell you that you have to get out of your work place and hand in your keys
And you sometimes have to ask permission to use the toilet plus the place is a dog box where they ask you to wait on ■■■■ chairs and it could be a few hours with no facilities except a horrible machine for tea or coffee

Where is the change for good, where is the progress from the past, progression, inprovement, facilities, treatment of drivers,
As long as a piece of string is the answer, why because as long as you have people who will put up with it you ain’t going to ever get it any where you get respect
And the problem is that the people who do this kind of thing and accept it is overtaking the people who would never put up with it
We are becoming a very rare breed thats the people who would never do it or put up with that ■■■■ and i put myself at the top of the list
And it’s not part of your job, the truck is your work place you should never be told you have to move from your work place

Keep a key and kip on the bunk.

Try telling that to the warehouse staff and FLT drivers who have been in the back of a lorry when some fool of a driver has pulled off the bay while the lorry was still being loaded/unloaded.

Sad, but true.
There are many ways of trying to prevent this happening, and taking keys away from the driver is the cheapest.
Inadequate, dirty, stuffy, waiting areas arent compulsory however. Ive not had to endure the places Ive heard described by others, so dont know how I would respond to that. Wasn`t there a suggestion at some point that photos of these places could be put on the social media sites of some of these companies? Did that ever happen? Or if it did, was the public uninterested?

I’ve always imagined that there must be a company somewhere which sells driver waiting room supplies, and all they sell is plastic chairs, broken vending machines and televisions which show continuous repeats of “Homes under the Hammer”.

I don’t have to deal with this issue at my current job and indeed only had to face it on a few occasions for short amounts of time (<30 mins) Why do you need your key to get back in your cab and if you want/must lock it then detach the remote and keep it? Idk, maybe I’m missing something here. Protecting warehouse workers - sure, isn’t that what the green/red light system is for? Besides every driver has to go get his signed/new papers from transport before leaving which they won’t sign/issue if the loading hasn’t finished so why would you try to leave before that?

I’ve been to Tesco P’borough twice, first time it was awful the waiting area 2nd time they had changed it with sofas and aircon and a TV showing your bay number and (I think) loading progress, only bad part was having to fiddle with a mini-safe where you had to store your key then retrieve it. Very neat. A couple drivers were napping on the sofas (leaning back not lying down but still)

i always think its ironic when i think the majority of viewers of homes under the hammer must either be oap wrinklies in hospital, nursing homes,or prisoners.

Health and safety gone mad. The truck aint going nowhere if they have your keys

Visiting driver at our place drove off with a stack of pallets wedged under the front of his truck. Despite all the shouting and hand waving, he only stopped when he got to the front gate. This led to a key surrender policy. All fine until one hot day and a driver is seen getting loaded with his engine running for the air con. Turns out he’d handed in a spare set of keys.

Our place is now set up to handle the thickest of the thick, which is a shame because most visiting drivers are decent lads. But how do you tell the idiots from the decent?

There are many ways, and just taking keys is cheapest. So why then when you go somewhere like screw fix at Stafford they’ve put all the money into an expensive suzie lock system where you’ve got to press the buttons and do the locks in the correct order otherwise the bay won’t go onto a red light. You can’t possibly drive off unless the trailer is dropped. Yet you’ve still got to go and hand keys in and have to wait in a little office next to a smelly toilet. Companies who have spent the money on a more expensive fail safe system like that still won’t let you to stay in your cab.

Boggles the mind.

Samworth Bros are the same. Salvo lock on the red line, hand keys in, still not allowed in your cab.

Though to be fair, their waiting area is better than most, you can watch Catchphrase and The Chase [emoji23]

some of the argument is so that if the fire alarm goes off, they do the head count at the assembly point, and dont need to go knocking up drivers out of their chugging chariots.
usual health and insanity pish…

So how would they go on with a driver that refuses to be exposed to TV?

…Don’t forget to draw closed your bunk curtains - or the yard “security” will boot you out of your cab for H&S reasons, forcing you to take a break on the service road which is invariably “no parking” and a whole lot LESS safe than just staying in your cab, pull red airline off, hand keys in regime…

There are too many yards that only enforce the H&S stuff that makes driver’s lives a misery, whilst glossing over the REAL dangerous stuff, like Forkies rushing about around corners, between trailers, etc.
