I’ve found 2 well known container firms, and a long established general haulier within 50 mile of my gaff who are offering new C2 drivers the chance to join them and get CE, then a job upon completion subject to getting through door again ffs lol, typical scheme of job then deduct cost which I’d be chuffed with tbh.
So yeah that’s my HOPE locally, plus being containers I hope tramping is an option as big saving in commuter costs which would be a huge help…
I’d have thought container’s would be the most likely sector to see tramping eventually die out. Seemingly more & more container movements in and out of the ports are going on the railways into regional railheads, quite rightly. Theres even a service starting up Liverpool - Tamworth.
Ask any tramper at Maritime’s Manchester depot, nights out now rarer than hens teeth. Boxes come up from Felixstowe/Southampton/London Gateway on the train straight into Trafford Park, truck just does the final leg down the road.
I can see your thinking, but some container hauliers use trampers to service this railhead scenario.
This is a couple of days out of My diary
For instance ex Felixstowe tip Doncaster, drop empty box into Leeds (norcon), collect loaded box Wakefield railhead(schenkers), tip Dewsbury (night out). Trailer change, empty for loaded box at Leicester, tip and turn Felixstowe, loaded box, tip Coventry, tip and turn box’s freightliner Birmingham, (night out). Loaded box for delivery to Wrexham following morning. Mostly we run to and from Felixstowe, but its not unusual to do this sort of bouncing about
Other operators I’ve been on with in the past, did this sort of tramping around railheads and ports to a greater extent. So sometimes tramping can work, obviously in Maritimes situation, with so many depots they can utilise the vehicles better by double shifting them

Totally agree with Juddian, different strokes and all that. If I was single with no ties then tramping round the UK/europe would definitely appeal, not for the money but more for the variety, but the way my life is I do trunking.
I put my son through his C2 last summer and he started through agency just before Christmas doing tyres in a 12t at one company, they’ve now moved him onto an 18t and a mix of tyres and pallets, he’s on a decent enough rate on days and actually enjoys doing tyres over pallets and prefers doing longer days, so far as long as he’s available he’s got work. His mate has just started at the same place and they share a car for the commute.
Benjie83, hang in there, there is work out there and decent firms out there that realise taking on newbie C2s and training them up is the best way to get decent drivers for the future. Don’t rule out agencies as a stop gap/way in but find a decent one, they do exist.

A screenshot posted on the internet is obviously 100% genuine and in no way faked. Screenshots and pictures are two of the most difficult things to fake and put on the 'net so this MUST be genuine. No further proof required

Well I’m sorry but I’m not prepared to reveal names on that statement. I made a quick screenshot but I fear that even walking some of you into the bank with me would not be enough proof but hey ho there you go. I don’t need to prove it to myself so I’ll carry on as per usual thanks.
Fortunately most of you will be getting a pay rise soon when they bring this living wage of £7.10 per hour in so at least you have that to look forward to.
