Right here on the A184 in Gateshead heading to the centre of Newcastle, there is a height limit of 10"6’ I believe just before you get to the Redheugh Bridge (A189). As I’m 12"6’ I always take the exit off to the roundabout undernearth and take the second exit back onto the bridge but its bothered me for a while as I can’t see anything that would require a height limit. No over wires, nothing overhanging.
I always assumed it was a restriction on the bridge and not a physical barrier, just to avoid high vehicles in a potentially high windy situation. But if you’ve used the bridge anyway it can’t be that.
It’s for windy conditions allegedly up over the top of the roundabout on the Redheugh Bridge A189.
When I drove, I ‘went over the top’ all the time, just be careful once over as you can scare the $%^& cars joining further over.
Never seen anyone get stopped for doing it too.
Although that sign (red circle on a white background) is a mandatory prohibition, not just a warning.
