Why is paper licence so cheap and tatty

With all the money DVLC/DVLA make out of us,the paper bit is rubbish and not hardy enough for daily use, fold it,it falls apart, why not put it in a plastic protective folder for free for us?Its a con.Is the UK the only eu country to have this system.Portuguese ID has finger prints on it,keeps the crime rate down, big fuss in the UK about new IDs with biometric or pupil scanning IDs,while the rest of the EU has been doing it for years.

Why do we need the paper bit at all? a plastic card should be sufficient, it is in the EU

They stopped handing out the plastic cover to cut costs, they even said so in the wee booklet you get supplied with. Why would you need your paper part for daily use? All I take to work with me is the plastic card. Are you telling me when you go places to tip or load they ask you for both parts for ID?

i thought i had read somewhere that they are doing away with the paper bit and just having the card.

if you work agency a lot its normaly every week they photo copy both parts, or if you start with a new agency/cliant you could be showing the paper part 3 or more times a week!

That’s progress for you!

I remember people shouting “where did you get your licence, a lucky bag?”, now it turns out you can actually buy them on E-Bay!

So when they fall apart you need to get a new one, thats how i lost my old paper licence didnt want to upgrade to a photocard one, got pulled by the police and they say it all selotaped together and falling apart and he took it off me said i needed to get a new one !

Because there is no way to show points on the plastic bit. All you see on the paper part now is your previous convictions.

For the life of me I don’t know why they didn’t put a chip in it with details of endorsements etc on it.

That would be too easy. Tbh it would make better sense to use your drivers licence as your digi card aswell… but we all know how backward the DVLA are

from what I remember from being on the taxis with a Portugese driver, abroad, In Portugal at least, they store endorsements on the police’s central computer system. hence no need for the paper.

The Jeermans seem to manage it and they are renowned for wanting “papers” :stuck_out_tongue:

It was only 10years ago that we managed to stick a mugshot on our driving licences, which brought it’s own issues in Europe

And produce a card reader which can be attatched to any computer by a USB port

If they managed it with the Digital Driver Card they could mange it with a driver’s licence, although I should bear in mind the following equation

British Govt (any party) + IT Systems = DISASTER.

Many agency jobs requires you to bring both parts along with you…
