With the regular closures of the A34 at Didcot, most vehicles, me included, have ignored the official diversion (4130-417-338-through Marcham and back to the 34) to go through Abingdon. Saves about half an hour, maybe more.
Last week, official road signs have appeared at the turning for Steventon telling us the road is “unsuitable for hgvs” and “road ahead closed”. Neither is true. It appears the Abingdon nimbys don’t want juggernaughts thundering through their village, yet it’s a ■■■■ sight better road than through Marcham, the official route!
Personally, I doubt that anyone official has placed these signs and since they are information signs, no offence has been committed by passing them.
So when 2 trucks have a late night coming together on that bend in Marcham or a 44t decides to carry on up the A415 to the A40 and has a dip in the river by the 2 pubs ,
What happens then ?
I drive around Dorset and Somerset mostly…the village residents tend to complain about hgv s. because they take up room on the highway and consequently they have no where to park their cars.
Try driving from Dorchester to Crewkerne…most of the villages are virtually blocked by cars…the nimbys don’t care up until the point they want a pallet of crap delivered…and don’t understand when they are told that it’s not going to happen because their special needs neighbour has blocked the road.
Just like this…
These people deserve to be allowed to park their infested four by fours wherever they want…oh but let me see…yes they still want to go the shops and complain that stuff hasn’t been delivered !

I Googled the phrase on that picture; it seems the council diverted trucks going from Warminster towards Poole on the A350 along a country lane instead of straight down the A350 which is still the northbound route. I’ve driven up that bit of road a few years ago in a 7.5-tonner; it’s a nightmare, a narrow two-lane road and the usual numpties that don’t quite keep to their lane. But they didn’t think people would use it going the other way as well, or indeed that some HGV traffic would be going that way anyway (besides, the route was slated for use as a replacement for the A350 a few years ago, but obviously it never got off the ground).

Never mind…it’s all part of life’s rich tapestry.
Been up that road a couple of times recently; never had my way blocked but I can see how it could happen. Main problem was it was narrow in parts with people who only move over at the last minute.
If they close the A3066 at Beaminster tunnel, as they have done a few times recently, and I’m in a 44T artic going from Bridport to Crewkerne, can I turn right at Beaminster onto the B3163 (Whitcombe Road) and turn left onto the A356 from that road? I drove past it the other day and there’s no weight limit sign on the A356 but is it passable?
Im sure the actor Jeremy Irons was in an anti lorry action group in the Oxfordshire area villages.
The Lgv route suggested by the council , to use Melbury Abbas, is pants for any size truck.
The sign is for south bound only.
But if a wagon comes north, when it is not supposed to, it is game over.
On the bends on the hill, there is no room for a car and a truck to pass, let alone two trucks.
When two vehicles meet on the bends, there are about 20 cars behind me, and 20 cars behind the truck going northbound.
Some old fool has put up a homemade sign with statistics on hours lost due to strannded trucks, and how many times a year it happens.
Not sure if the old fools information is entirety accurate, as I never see anybody by the house, he must make up duff information for the purposes of fake news.

You say that like it’s a strange thing.
Abingdon is a town not a village
And you REALLY don’t want to take an artic through the middle of Abingdon as it literally was designed for horse and cart…

With the closure between Milton and Abingdon, the closure is as described above. When it was closed from Abingdon northbound, the official diversion took you through Abingdon itself and out at the Abingdon north turnoff. I’ve said Abingdon too many times now. I’m off.
I remember delivering a load of concrete pilings for a construction site in Bucks years ago, Cant remember the name of the village now, anyway we were told to deliver at a specific time, imperative you don’t turn up before or after your alloted time, Ha! when I turned up bang on time there were 8 more arctics there waiting FFS.
The village was backed up with traffic, we couldn’t go forward or backwards, A guy came running up from from the village & banged on my door shouting you’ve just broken my house foundations I said are you high or something lol.
PC Plod turned up and told us to move, we had to ring the construction guys for another unloading time (this was before mobiles phones) we ended up miles away from the place before we could park up & find a phone box. There was an angry crowd of villages at the entrance to the construction site shouting at us when we arrived again.

Yes you can! It’s a little bit tight for the first few hundred yards but then plain sailing all the way up to the Crewkerne Dorchester road…
A couple of weeks ago the tunnel road was closed and there were plenty of coaches and arctics using that turning at Beaminster…the problems tend to be when you are about 3 miles from Crewkerne with tractors and caravans who seem blind to hgv s. But if you take it easy s not insurmountable.
To answer the question, it’s about money and how posh the village is.
Weight limits will happily divert trucks past council houses and “affordable” houses for no reason other than the posh people have mounted a successful campaign to send them somewhere else. It’s just money. Nowt else.
All my long life we used to go through Killinghall to join the A59, then for no reason I could see trucks got diverted towards Harrogate then onto A59. What did all those people on that road do to deserve all the extra trucks? Didn’t they have enough already?

Yes Jeremy Irons lives in Watlington Oxfordshire and does not like trucks going through his village, have been through there a few times and i have to say it can be a nightmare when the school run is on! And as you say the Melbury Abbas road is pants and if you meet another truck in the middle it can be a complete nightmare as i was once stuck there for a good 25 mins as a bulk tipper had come the other way!(he was coming down the wrong way). And as for the old fools information sign i have been told he does update it! I don’t bother using that road now anyway i just follow the A30 out of Shaftesbury and into the next village of Ludwell then turn right towards Ashmore and Tollard Royal and follow that through to Compton Abbas airfield as this brings you out at the top of the hill which totally avoids Melbury Abbas.

He updates it every day, it has number of blockages due to hgv, longest time taken to unblock and the average time and this weeks total. I pass it every day.
