Why is it...

That the only drivers that seem willing to watch a fellow driver into a tight spot are foreigners? What happened to the British helping one another!

I’m lead to believe they stopped being Knights of the Road, when Eaton twinsplits were replaced by autos, and ropes and sheets were replaced by curtainsiders…

■■■■, I’m obviously far too late to the party! Although I have driven a twin split, do I get a gold star?

I don’t mind watching anyone into a tight spot.
I mean I’ll sit there all day and watch someone
The problem is a lot of drivers can’t direct.
A fair few don’t have a clue.
Then you have others that don’t understand instructions.
Even the basic simple

STOP gets lost in translation.

On the occaisions I’ve tried to help peeps reverse…(which I do from the front of the vehicle)

They’ve ignored me and carried on faffing around with their mirrors and hoping it’ll fit.

There’s also the possibilty of the solicitors/paperwork/Spanish inquisition being involved if you guide someone and then something gets damaged.

personally I don’t know what the worlds coming to,only last weekend I was standing outside the kebab shop with about 15 other people watching an old lady get beaten up by 2 scallywags in a shop doorway across the road.she took a wild beating for about 10 minutes and not 1 person went to her aid…shocking or what… :open_mouth:

I know what you mean, I’ve had a few I’ve tried to help utterly ignore me!

Surely no blame can be placed on the Good Samaritan trying to assist, essentially the buck stops with driver right?

I was in a spot getting tipped last week, engineering yard with a narrow blindside reverse, i was just about done and ready to leave when a bloke turns up in a rental truck with an empty trailer to drop in the yard where i was parked, he walks over and says
"Any chance you could back mine in as im hopeless at reversing " :open_mouth: now i dont mind watching someone but how do you ever learn if you dont even have a go, i have to say though it was hard work getting him in and at one point i actually felt like dragging him out and doing as he asked in the first place

I was getting distressed and worried myself, as I was concerned the Kebab shop as going to be closed by the time I got the money off her! :imp:

Absolutely it does.

I’d still be gutted if someone called me back into an accident though! I came to within a gnats ■■■■ of that happening to me, I was less than impressed! The guys response?

“I was calling you back on the body, not the Manitou bars”. They stick out another 6 inches… :open_mouth:

Sometimes you’ve got to cruel to be kind! When I first started (not long ago, still wet behind the ears !) I had a few drivers offer to do it for me, I politely declined and asked if they’d give me a shout if I was a going to smack something. And I’m glad I declined because now I’m at a point where 7 times out of 10 I can do a (semi) decent job. The only way to learn is by doing.

Sounds like a a qualified banksman! Most of them seem to like misjudging everything!

Very true.

Reminds me of the last time I saw an Eastern European assisting a driver who was struggling. This assistant was giving all the right signals to the driver, but the driver was manoeuvring like something out of Laurel and Hardy, while the trailer body looks like it’s going to fall apart under all the strain, and he says to me in broken English as we’re both giggling with astonishment, “I don’t know, maybe he has not many years”!

Where I work it’s a tight fit. We regularly end up blocking the road while another numpty who WON’T listen to instructions tries to do it his way.
We have a bin just inside the gate for all the steps that get ripped off [SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH AND TIGHTLY-CLOSED EYES]

I don’t bother trying to help anymore and definitely not in the winter months.

I will watch anyone into a tight spot, especially if it’s my lorry they’re backing in next to! I do not tell them when to turn the wheel or offer verbal guidance as they took the job, they passed the test and they are getting paid the big bucks  to do it. I will like I say watch them in and stop them prior to them hitting something.

On odd occasions (frozen bays at Bidvest Banbury) I’m thankful of someone keeping their eye on the arse end of my trailer for me, but I don’t expect all the arm waving that some seem to like.

Have to agree mate, all I’ve ever asked for is someone to shout stop you pillock at me, funnily enough people seem to do it even when I’m not driving… Can’t think why!

Also bidvest Banbury, I think we all need a hand there from time to time!

Nah mate, it was when drivers starting having the audacity to use a sat nav and embrace technology instead of pouring over a paper map
