This thread is of particular interest to me, because I am in the process of graduating from my mid-life crisis, and one of the conclusions I have drawn is that getting out of Britain might help me enjoy the final furlong. The question is- where to go. Fortunately, my interest in old lorries has drawn me to a forum populated by well-travelled people!
I think most of us will agree that mass immigration buggers up things for working people, even if it brings the benefits of lower wage bills to the business end of a population. On the other hand, I am not averse to the argument that Britain’s working class has, over the years, shown considerable enthusiasm for buggering up its own affairs. I have seen the effects of economic migration in Sweden and, to a lesser extent, in Finland. Has anyone got any experience of Norway- employment, pensions etc?
Hi Mike and Roger, merry christmas to you both. As someone else who fled the overcrowded melting pot that is the UK for a different life I too would be hesitant about going back, maybe in about 10 yrs once the pension has kicked in and accrued for a while we might consider a place by the sea but for the time being we shall probably stay here in Texas. We like the heat and having traveled all over the USA in hot and cold it’s good to come home to some warmth in the winter even though it gets pretty sticky in summer its preferable to months of cold and damp.
As I am suffering from a Lymphoma on my neck and will have to have Chemotherapy we did consider going back to England for treatment and to live but we can get the medical care here without costing a fortune and there is so much work here that I can still work between treatments, plus trying to throw ourselves on the mercies of the social we would probably find we were in the queue behind all the immigrants and end up in a doss house before getting what as a subject of her majesty we are entitled to.That in its self was enough to put us off going back for anything more than a holiday so I can relate to everything you are saying.
All the best Charlie
Hi all.Roger[if your back in Sweden]or anyone else in the south.Just curious but what’s the weather now as they say it is the worst storms for 20 years now in S Sweden-Norway-Danmark.
We had 35cms snow in the last 2 Days and -30c,but thats normal here.
Hi Mike I can confirm weather in Esbjerg horrendous! No ships to or from Immingham til Monday, its headline news at mo. Both bridges closed to all traffic not just trucks which means it must be bad. Can’t do much about it but wait it out. SkÃ¥l!
Hi HUTPIK,
I agree! with you very well written comments,.and your attitude to your adopted country, and the words, “they wanted to come here”…,
the only time we get to see anything about sweden,or any of scandinavia , is if we watch the tv shows…crime ,and one recently brought to light the immigration problem in Sweden that is not news here.on BBC4.not a snow flake in sight ,yet.
Hi Mike

Roger
Hi Roger.Sorry to hear that mate.Hope you get better soon, then you can hurry back to the clean air.
At the moment we have a 40c difference between South and North. In Göterborg it was + 8c,here it’s -32c,a proper winter .Take care.Mike
Hey,not much to see with Sweden but only a tought and look on the world. The grass is always greener at the other side.I think that every country has its goods and bads, its like a truck if you could make one out of its bites of different parts, it would be perfect.
Here its not perfect in Belgium, maybe you can earn more abroad, les traffic, less refugees and so on and on and on.
But if you comes older you need help, and if I see that our hospitals are good filled with French, English and Dutch people I think its not so bad our assistance here. And nobody has to live on the street if he doesn’t want all can get a household payment of the local concil, but the worst thing is that we all payed for it and now all refugees are ruin our money box, which come in every day and only are taking advantage of it. And countries as Canada for instance are more closed for such fools.
And yes here too rich become richer and do all forture escapememt, and workpeople Always have to tighten their belts. And have less and less freedom in their own country against all those idiots.
Maybe you think that i am a bit racist but only say what most are thinking, should we get such assistance in their countries if we were refugees ■■?
if we give up in WWII lots take refuge to france, but there arrived had to stay in the Railway wagons in heat even without water to drink. And in the Netherlands were abused because we were eating their so scarce food as refugees.
And that’s only nearby, what would it be in far eastern countries■■?

All the ex pats on here are immigrants.BUT there is a great difference between people who move to another country to improve their lives and accept the rules and regulations of that country and who try to fit in by learning the language and culture, integrating within the system, and working and contributing to the system. And people who go to another country and do nothing but complain that it is not like the place they left, refuse to integrate within the country and even want the country of refuge to adapt to their way of life, but gladly take all that is offered without contributing anything back to the system.
You could be describing the tens of thousands of Brits living on the Spanish costas.when I’m tipping down there it always surprises me how well intergrated everybody is with their fluent English & their full Spanish breakfasts,
I Think that is a rather rude and demeaning statment, comparing the inhabitants of the ‘‘Costa el Crime’’ to the thousands of genuine people that have moved abroad to better themselves or improve their lives and have integrated fully in their countries of choice.
The majority of us ‘ex pats’ have fitted in remarkably well and are contented and generally well treated by the local people who accept us as an asset rather than a burden.
