Why headlights are a must for the wet

Your travelling at 55mph, you glance at the mirror and see this :

Even taking time to study a photo of it, it’s still hard to see the black car at the side of the back of the trailer. It just goes to show why headlights or LED lights must be on in wet conditions.

Here is the car 20 foot nearer.

Pictures were not taken by me before some smart alec comes along, they were taken by my brother who came with me about a year who was on the bed at the time.

All new cars should be made so they are on all the time or at least have those LED lights built in.

A better idea would be if Daf actually spent money on designing mirrors that stayed clean and didn’t get covered in rain and crap kicked up from the road.

One of the reasons I like my Volvo C30, as soon as the engines on dipped beam engages.

Those LEDs are great apart from one drawback, they don’t have matching ones on the rear of the vehicle.

Agreed!
I have found it gets worse if you put the mirror heaters on ,pure waste of time.

:grimacing: That’s funny, it’s just what I was thinking :smiling_imp:

Is that even possible?

Years ago a guy on Tomorrow’s World invented a truck mirror that was circle, when it was raining the mirror glass would rotate at high speed which kept the mirror spotless. I wonder if they could use them instead of the smaller more rounded mirror, you would still have the same vision. Then again, the price of a normal mirror for a truck is ridiculous, maybe it would be too costly. I do find that the worst trucks for dirty windows and mirrors is the volvo fh12’s though. Maybe it’s something to do with the angle of the windscreen, I don’t know.

You need a couple of pieces of old bedsheet tied to those mirrors

It’s not just car drivers who don’t understand this.

i drove a version one FH for a Swedish company regularly running around GB, the only problem with having lights on all the time is i used to get flashed a hell of a lot during the day because my lights were on.

this what happened in my FH, the only way to get around this problem of lots of people flashing me was to put the lights onto sidelights. It wasnt possible (without pulling the fuse) to drive the lorry with no lights on at all, and its law if you drive in Sweden to have lights on all the time, this is why Volvo’s are like this.

Along with mandatory eye tests every 3 years, and they should be a lot harder than “read out that number plate”

Daf mirrors are rubbish at crap build up & the heated function, Scania are much better.

I’ve never been flashed in the Volvo, but it’s got factory Xenon’s and self levelling so they probably always line up right and don’t dazzle too many. As I said I really like it and it’s a shame Volvo trucks never took it up full style.
