My yacht has a cheap fish finder depth gauge that shows me how deep the water is and were the mud banks are, couldn’t this be used upside down for telling drivers the height of bridges etc? Just a thought.

Why does’nt someone invent a height gauge for a truck?.
It’s called your brain!

Thats why they put signs up telling you the bridge height.
But doesn’t that mean the truck would have to be already under the bridge to get a reading? Defeating the object. Maybe some sort of laser measurer similar to what estate agents use, maybe fitted to the top corner of the trailer pointing down. Would be ideal except its all £££ that could be better spent elsewhere. If you’re that bothered about your trailer height you can’t beat a tape measure. Floor to underside of trailer, underside of trailer to a point on the headboard and there to the roof (depending on your height)

Have you not heard of a tape measure then?
I thought bridges had signs before them ?
Edit…read the bloody OP proper…doh.
I misread the OP so my now deleted post about height sticks was off the mark, again.
Don’t DIY sheds sell laser tape measures, bounce a signal off a far wall?
Should work.
Actually on second thoughts, you could easily use a height stick to measure internally as well as its normal use, so here’s the link.
arinsdale.com/ProductGuide/t … fault.aspx
Proper car transporter companies have issued these to drivers for years.
Probably because the consequences of an electronic gauge being faulty could be disastrous.
The great thing about tape measures or height sticks is that the only error you’re likely to get is human; having yet another digital display in the cab for drivers to ignore/misread/ is asking for trouble. For example, if the digital display itself is faulty, shows up 3.6 metres as the trailer height when its actually 3.8, driver would be tempted to go under a 3.7 bridge at speed and put a severe tilt on the trailer.
Not worth the hassle.
Something else that be a good invention would be straps that warn you if they break or loosen cos the load shifts.

In the UK the legal minimum required height of any un-marked overhead obstical is 16’6" anything under that must be marked, if it’s not marked it must be over 16’6" so if you are worried buy a damm tape measure FFS.
In cases where there are a lot of bridge strikes you will find there are usually height detectors on the aproach, the reason you have not seen them is because you were not over height and did not trigger them.
I know two such spots from my memories of the 80’s … Blackwall and Dartford tunnels.
Hold on a minute, the heights marked on bridges are not the true heights, they make them lower to keep us away,we used to go through Wilton near Salisbury with a high cube container, that should not fit with the height marked up.

Sort of the same thing in upstate NY. The bridges were marked a foot lower than they really were so you could sail through a 13’ bridge with a 13’ 6" truck. When they changed the sign to the actual height there would be another sign saying ’ actual height ’ . This was ok as long as they did’nt forget to put up the other sign or some little plonker did’nt remove it or some truck driver tried to go through anyway but that never happens
It keeps the anti truck Nimby`s happy.!!!

Hang a sweeping brush on the front of your trailer roof. mark the end on the trailer with your finger.
Remove said sweeping brush and measure handle from head to end.
Measure from finger mark to floor
Its a good question if you carry a box its easy but some machinery would be awkward to be accurate. I’m thinking atmospheric pressure, Zero it on the ground then climb to the highest point using full P.P.E and take another reading.

Bit of space and application of maths, done from floor level. I do that all the time and it’s pretty critical I get it right and expensive if I don’t
