Why do we do it

There’s a goods in/flt guy at a place I go to and he’s as predictable as night and day. Doesn’t matter what time you turn up, he starts ranting, shaking his head and huffing and puffing: “you’re not booked in until x/you’re late/we don’t have room so you’ll have to come back later” etc. My standard response every time is a beaming smile with “no problem Paul! I’ll go park up at the top and get my head down for a bit, give us a knock when you’re ready”. And his response every time? “No, tell you what, bring it down and open your curtains”. 15 mins later 26 pallets have been removed and I have signed lines in my hand  . I think they just do it to see if we’ll bite.

Beginning to wonder after this last week - we have had a new office bod who started a couple of weeks ago.

First week - fine - few things but nothing too annoying.

This week - I have had more calls these five days than the previous six months combined. All fine if it’s actual important stuff but it’s just random [zb].

Yesterday it culminated into this.

I was unstrapping a load and I heard the works phone go, busy so I left it (our place usually knows if we don’t answer, we’re busy), then my personal mobile went. Again I left it. Next - the customers mobile went - he passed the phone over - “how
long are you going to be you think?”

I was actually embarrassed and apologised to the customer.

Sounds petty now I’m writing it but I’ve had 5 days of this building up.

Have had similar from my office only once.
Just told her “a ■■■■ sight quicker if you stop bothering me and follow procedures”
To which I got dragged in bosses office as he wanted words with me.
Next day works phone was left in her office. My phone turned off and she soon realised that you don’t bother a driver unless its urgent.

Dont do RDC work but shops can be a pain in the ass usually the girls come out “got no backdoor bod” can you tip it?
Err no dont think so or if they’re taking ages usually tell em “hurry up got another shop to do cant keep my fans waiting”

That problem can be easily rectified. :smiling_imp:

I have got a doss of a job but the job in general has gone downhill in the 27 odd years that I’ve been at it. Primarily I suppose the death of continental work which I used to love, and even if there was continental work I could quote competitively on, law enforcement on the continent is draconian nowadays, with huge fines being handed out for the smallest transgression.

VOSA, or DVSA seem to be heading the same way, and all of this “health and safety” just does my head in. I’m lucky in that it’s my own truck so I don’t have to put up with tracking, driver-facing cameras and all that malarkey, I thought the job was far better in the days before mobile phones even.

I can tolerate the work, and in general I get on very well with my traffic office and the vast majority of the customers but I’m only planning on doing another 10 months until the finance on the truck is paid off, then I’m either going to go down to working six months a year and spending the other six on my boat, or packing it up completely and living afloat full-time, maybe just doing a bit of agency work now and again to top the money up a bit.

I’ve had some fantastic experiences over the years but I certainly wouldn’t get into in now if I was starting out again and neither of my kids have the remotest interest in driving a truck for a living.

Gotta say I’m with LHD^^^ on this, they have either had them smashed in already or need enlightening in the aspects of ‘penetration via the wrong un’

I think its the workplace in general, we can all remember the easy going days of no mobile phones no digis, hand written tickets, no cameras, every aspect of the job is stressed, and I assume everyone elses is, every jumped up little so and so is responsible for enforcing the firms elf&safety or they get it in the neck, and the attitude everywhere stinks, but hey ho I remember my dads tales of 2 days down the docks in some old Lad cabbed heap and the dockers marking the tyres with chalk, leave to get something to eat and you’ve had it. :open_mouth:

Has anyone here worked for a company called driving plus? Heard good things, but just wondered, had a call from them.

Four posts on four different threads about this and I’m starting to think that YOU work for them!

It looks a bit suspicious to me too
