Why do some truckers drive such crappy cars?

eagerbeaver:
Trust me chap, Ford’s don’t drive as nice as 450 bhp German M cars…

I’d happily swap an E39 M5 for a 302 V8 Mk2 Zodiac or Granada. It doesn’t matter how good it ‘drives’ if its an economic write off stuck in the garage because it’s too expensive to fix when it goes wrong.

All bets are off if the BM has a Chevy LS engine in it.Although some say ze German chassis components aren’t up to handling the torque of the proper old school pushrod motor.

You talk some amount of guff.

Who are these “some”? An E39 has more torque than an “old school” LS.

I hope I can get a few pints of whatever you drink when the pubs are back open, swap an E39 for a Granada, Jesus wept. :unamused:

Feel free to call 370 v 430 more.

Yep I’ll happily swap a Mk2 Granada with a 302 V8 in it for an E39 M5.
I’d prefer go a bit slower with something that can actually be fixed for less than the value of the car when it needs engine work.Even a standard 2.8i V6 is now often worth more than the BM if you can find one for sale.

Er - no it doesn’t. Any of the LS “crate” engines give significantly more torque (425 - 485 ft-lb as compared with the E39 M5 at 369 ft-lb). Even the lowest spec iron-blocked L96 “truck” engine give a little more than the BMW. As the old saying goes “There ain’t no substitute for cubic inches”

Apart from one car, I usually drove a very second hand van, last 2 were Vauxhall combos. You’d not have said I was the boss as I parked next to Mercs and VW Scirocco on new plates.

Unless the government go silly, entirely possible, ill be driving my 7 year old Porsche Cayenne for a long time. Good engineering, big engine should last. Probably break down tomorrow now.

Yep all the aggro of variable valve timing and multiple cams and valves to maintain to go slower and it takes up more space under the bonnet.
That is a lovely conversion no need to even start with the pointlessly complicated expensive M5.

Our resident moon howler said “old school”. The LS started in the mid 90s with 350lb ft. E39s are 370lbft. I assumed he meant the first generation.

The LS2 and beyond have more. I’m not sure he knows what an LS is, since the Granada he’s dribbling about is 10 years older than the LS. My mistake, I’m expecting him to make sense.

It’s clear that I just meant not having the complication of a gazillion overhead camshafts and even more valves and variable valve timing, also taking up more room under the bonnet, to ultimately go slower in the case of the E39 not the Granada.

As for the Mk2 Granada as I said that was also going to go quite quick enough with a just as old school, but obviously smaller capacity 302, or 351, Ford V8.Quick enough to sort out an E28, possibly even an E34 M5, in that case.Again without all the expensive complicated aggro of multi OHC and valves.
