I’ve just read on the Motor Transport blog that apparently “fast eddie” is looking to INCREASE,yes INCREASE, some of their rates due to cost pressures, well this must be a first as they’ve spent the last 30 odd years cutting them !!!Wonders will never cease !! Bewick.
With all respect Bewick, every, yes every haulage company has under cut every other company to get that lucrative contract. Owner drivers have done it also for years, it’s just the way of the world.
Lets face it Bewicks did it when getting the paper mill work from people like AA Griggs and alike, as they did to others also.
Stobarts did some good by smart ending up the rather poor image of haulage but took it a bit too far in the end with uniform etc.

You could not be more wrong “m1tch”,what you suggest happened at Bewick Transport and many other decent hauliers couldn’t be further from the truth.Bewick’s,in particular, obtained their traffic by a combination of their service record at other customers and also by charging an economic fair rate for the work which was oft’ pointed out that although we were the dearest or on occaisions, close to be the dearest,on balance they awarded us the traffic ! As regards your mention of AA Griggs, which Paper Mill are you talking about? The only time we came into contact with AAG was at a little carton producer over in Cambridge(in the same group as AAG) and because of the dismal service given by AAG we were asked if we could help ! However,as all the transport for the Group went through AAG we had to invoice them and run at AAG rates, which we did!.The Carton works were pleased, and we were once we’d tipped our load of reels from East Lancs as there wasn’t a lot of re-loads round Cambridge,it was only AAG who were “■■■■■■■ but they had continually let their sister co. down so fair do’s !! I could quote you many other instances but in every case it wasn’t based on rate cutting, quite the opposite in fact.Cheers Bewick.
I’d like to know WHEN the actual hatered started??
Years ago, If I remeber rightly… You’d hear on the radio, if you spotted a certain named truck and it’s location etc, you’d ring it in and maybe win something?
Now this…
P.S. Is it the drivers or the company that’s hated?

Never watched the program and never will, most fly on the wall progs turn into docu soaps.
I dislike companies whos staff end up working excessive hours for an industry average gross wage, as high profile as they are they should (my opinion only i speak for no one else) salary their drivers as others have done at a decent level and allow their staff to have a true 48 hour week, thereby giving them a work life balance.

Stobbies aren’t on their own paying poor wages, but they are well known so get the stick…most of which is fully deserved. If you work for them, you tend to stick up for them as you don’t like admitting they are taking the ■■■■ out of you somewhat.

it’s insurance renewal time, do you just take the renewal price, or do you shop about?

You shop around…but you reach the point beyond which you won’t find cover…and companies that will go so cheap will end up going out of business…unless they cut their costs and pay their staff a lot less money…

There is a well known form of words," The cheapest is not usually the best" and that sentiment is more than true as regards insurance renewals !! Cheers Bewick.

All you ever hear about is drivers moaning about the wage, everyone seems to think their worth £15pa but you only have to look at other threads on here with people giving it the, “im not working a 15hr shift with 9 off” and you can see why employers pay what they do.
Anyone who has experience in business will know that giving employees an above average rate and/or giving them pay rises will actually have a detrimental effect on productivity.

i quite agree, but i never said cheapest but do you shop around?
I don’t think anyone should hate stobarts they are a business plain and simple
They employ people thus keeping them of the old rock n roll saving us hard workin tax payers hard earned money goin to yet more dole dossers
What I also can’t work out is if so many people hate then why they constantly are discussed on this forum
I hate my ex wife and I spend as little time as poss thinking about her or talking about her
I think it’s just the typical lemming effect when it comes to stobarts
Cos a few drivers moan about them n bang on about how they undercut n put out of business so n so haulage people jump on the band waggon n before you no it every driver in the country nos some firm who’s been run out of business by Eddie
They are no different from the likes of maritime Wincanton kuene n nagel
D s v etc
It may be a ■■■ wage but some people don’t have a choice. Some folk might need the security of a full time job, even if it means working long hours for low pay when compared to the “dreaded agencies” and their so called lies and unreliable work (not from experience, just what is so often posted on here).

Hmmm…sounds like cobblers to me…I ran a pro function band for several years and found that, if I paid decent money I got better players. If I paid excellent money (which I did) I got excellent players that were loyal. And the punters were happy they’d got a top band. There is a saying about peanuts and monkeys…
Why do so many drivers think it’s so great to work for poor money? I don’t get it!
In my opinion is bloody stooopid. People moan about em for under cutting the tv programme bla bla bla…
Well if they do under cut, its business so get over it.
As for the tv programme, your the md of a company a tv channel approaches you and offers you the biggest form of advertising you could dream off and no doubt a tidy sum for it too, would you take it?? Yes of course you bloody would. If not, then that’s one of the reasons you drive a lorry earn what you do moan like you do and the Stobarts are worth millions and own race horses etc etc.
There seems to be a huge amount of jealously in my opinion. And a huge amount of drivers room bull ■■■■. Tales of this and tales of that. People talking out there arses!!
There a company that generate loads off employment, pay there taxes (unlike other thieving scum bag coffee selling companies!!) They offer good work, lovely wagons, stability for staff etc etc. So for funk sake give it a great hey songs getting very boring now.
I’ve never worked for 'em, and never even had to deal with their staff, rdcs, etc.
The only irritation I get is trying to find somewhere to park up, and finding all the laybys stuffed with either them, or nobbies.
It wouldn’t bother me if it wasn’t for the fact that they should just open some damned VOCs south of watford gap, rather than park all over other places like they do.
Even their move from DIRFT to Magna Park smacks of “moving it back north of watford gap” doesn’t it?
Now that the recession is officially over as of today, I guess they don’t want to be subject to the same upward wage pressures as will now occur down south.
From what I remember, they came out of knowhere when I was driving and seemed to hijack a lot of the contracts, talk was going around they seemed to be getting contracts here there and everywhere, Haulage owners hated them and drivers seemed to ridicule their drivers, wearing ties etc.
I know for a fact late 80’s early 90’s they rarely used to park up in laybys or services, they had to park at their own depots if tramping, due to rumoured harassment.
For me, at that time, their vehicles were crap and the pay wasnt great so I was never tempted _ they only ever seemed to do trolley dolly work then also … boring.
