Why do companies ban the use of sat nav's?

As above,i just can’t see the justification of it.
Surely they don’t prefer you to sit with a A-Z on your steering wheel,we do upto 17 drops a day in a class 1 if we couldn’t use sat nav most runs would not get finished.
Is it health and safety gone mad?

Because some drivers can’t use it conjunction with common sense.

If you want to use one use one .

AAHH! I have met such drivers before, the “the sat nav took me down that lane”,they of course have them special sat navs that take over control of the vehicle leaving the driver sitting on the bunk hoping he doesn’t get “taken down” a narrow lane against his wishes.

Because it doesn’t take you the approved route.

Most of the places that ban them give you a set route to the drop, due to local planning restrictions or height issues.

I do go to places that ban them, but I do use mine. Mainly as its the handsfree for my phone, but also because I use common sense, i.e follow their routes or use it in conjunction with a bridge height map

I do,we can be sent to a area we are not fimiliar(sp) with,13-17 drops on the trailer,no sat nav would equal a expensive hotel bill for our company once my 15 hrs had run out lol

You running day cabs then? If not they won’t be paying for any hotels.

My company is the opposite. As of next week, we are all supposed to be getting sat navs fitted to our trucks. But its for their benefit as well as ours, because they are also trackers that relay everything from where you are, your driving style and fuel consumption. I had the tom tom 7100 fitted as a demo and another driver had the navman. Boss says the navman is better from his point of view with the info it gives him. I cover the same area daily so rarely even need my a-z let alone a sat nav. I personally found the sat nav distracting. :frowning:

No we have sleeper cabs but we are on day runs,we are not required to carry overnight gear,i have done and will no doubt again stay in a premier inn, travel lodge courtesy of my employer

I remember the first time I came across a satnav. I was doubled up with another hourly paid agency driver and our mission for the day was 10 drops spread across Berkshire and Hampshire out of Harlow. Kerching!!! Then matey boy pulls out his £400 TomTom for that is what they cost back in the day. I asked him why he wanted a very expensive satnav bought at his own expense to reduce his earnings for the day? Well it turned out he had ambitons of starting his own agency and was trying to create a good impression with what he saw as his potential client…agencies, eh? :unamused:

I am surprised at how long companies are taking to spec truck suitable satnav in their fleets as it undoubtedly pays for itself in a very short time based on fuel savings alone.

why do some drivers work for these dictators?
probably because they are thick as pig [zb], and that’s all they are worth.
i’ve had a job offer off a firm that dictated a whole list of crap that i wasn’t allowed to do, and about half way through her blah, blah, blah. i had to stop her and say something on the lines of “i’m sorry, but i can’t work for you, i do the job how it should be done, i can’t work for a company that operates like you. i’m sure you’ll find an idiot to suit your needs”. goodbye.

i would have to say 20 plus years on the job i scofed at the thought of sat navs but my son bought me one for christmas and i admit its brilliant garmin i will admit its took me some strange routes and tried to get me thru 7.5 limits but a bit of common sense is all thats needed plus no more big heavy work bag full of a-z s
