why are you a truck driver ?

I’m a truck driver because as a kid I went all over europe with my dad in the school holidays so knew what I wanted to do from an early age

Same here, but around England instead.

How sad and unfortunate that you will probably be the last generation to be able to make such a statement. Apart from the ex commie bloc countries just where will the next generation come from?

I realise from a previous thread that there are youngsters coming into the business, but I can’t believe for a moment that the number of young drivers will ever be able to make up for the natural wastage that happens daily. Sad times. :open_mouth:

Just always did. Doesn’t run in the family, dad was a milk man going in the milk float not the same as a truck. Can only remember seeing trucks when a young un, so passed me test at 21 after doing 3 years in I.T in a office still think its the best decision I’ve made.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

How wrong can you be…

Miss spent school holidays also!

Grandad was a driver, dad & uncle both drivers, cousin is a fitter so it sort of runs in the family. Sister even married a driver the silly moo

Alternative was 10 years in prison

Any chance i got as a yoof i was always with my uncle doing the ■■■■■■■ of the blower pipes round the farms for Carrs Farm feeds, and bouncing big blocks of foam off the wagon when he drove for Cheri foam,
Then the first thing i ever drove was a AJ Markley 142 Scania round a shed in Liverpool docks think i was around 14… had the bug ever since.Pretty sad really …

coz i like trucks

Because its the only well paid deadend job no matter how many hours it takes to get that wage and like most other drivers Ive reached the end of the road

Because I was an idiot at school and got no qualifications! :grimacing:

it’s in the blood, and i love it.
it has its bad points, but it’s a good way to make a living.
when i’m looking for a new job, i check them out, and take the attitude of “do they deserve me”.
it sounds big headed, but it’s not.
i have a set of rules, and i stick to them.
hourly rate firms are not worth a toss. you might as well be a sweeper up.

By mistake…

the money is good for a dead end job

Because i needed a change from present career and it was always in the family and interested me & learning/test was free.
Then i woke up and went back to my original career. Got fed up with traffic and people treat you like sh*t.

Because I couldn’t get a job as a scientist (early 80’s), and trained up for computers (late 80’s) just as the bottom dropped out of THAT labour market as well. :imp:

In the end, I decided I wanted to earn enough to get a mortgage (although the ability to pay one off has yet to come!), get married, have a family like everyone else - without pay deflation removing my chances of ever moving out of my folk’s house!

I settled on trucking, because I don’t get on with most people, and get by quite happily on my own on the road. The job has it’s ups and downs, but there will always be a need for drivers - even if more full time posts are being replaced by agency these days. If you can’t beat 'em, join them - so I did!

just sort of happened

First taste of it was going with my Dad in his lorry on school holidays, always around wagons from then on,loading,unloading/pilfering from. was taught by Dad how to reverse trailers.Have done lots of other jobs, but always seem to get drawn back into haulage.
Driving will do for me,there’s a lot worse ways of making a few quid.

Because I’m no good at anything else and I’m not even particularly good at this,
