Why are truck stops so expensive?

Why are they so expensive, I went to stop at a truck stop in Dover just and they said it’s £28 and you get £5 for a meal, just seems so much to pay to park

Because they can charge that much. They’re full at times so people are obviously prepared to pay. I agree though. It is an extortionate amount to charge

£2.50 per hour that’s only about the same as paying to park your car in town but your truck is 4 times the size and they feed you as well.

because they assume the company will be footing the bill and they will claw it back in tax …

Best one found so far is Sedgemoor M5 N £18 with £7 food voucher showers half decent aswell.

As a bonus the blonde girl in WH Smiths is gorgeous   lol

There one local ish to where I live that’s £11 a night with showers etc, no meals or anything but there a pub close by that does take away food,

Not being picky just a point. they don’t claw it back in tax they just don’t pay tax on that £28 so the firm still £20 ish out of pocket

Its not exactly cheap to setup a truckstop, especially one with good facilities and services, you have to factor in the cost of:
Land
Facilities
utilities
insurance
heating/lighting
equipment
Staff
and much more

Because of Nimbys and the general lack of cheap land with planning permission near main routes, especially in the South of England and most of the suitable land is also valuable for other industrial and retail use such as distribution warehousing, which would probably give you a far greater return on your investment, you then have to build and staff the facilities.

I understand that they all have overheads but how can one go from £10 for parking/shower and a £2 meal voucher included to £10 just to park, and £16 if you want a meal and still have to pay for a shower.

To park a truck at an average (£20 a night) MSA or Truckstop for 6 nights a week for a month is about the same price as a mortgage on a starter home. Its free in France.

But you’ve already paid the privilege of using their private motorway to get to the French Service station.

Was she working? Only a dot of a girl and I would lol

Because they often provide such a crap service they can’t make the money elsewhere, food etc. Just look at the German truckstops, if they charge it’s a small amount that you can use towards a meal. A good meal in a nice restaurant, along with a big shop selling quality stuff you actually want to buy. in contrast look at Lymm for example. Not sure I’ve ever seem more than Hal a dozen eating there at any one time and as for the shop…

In the UK they want to screw the maximum amount of money from you for the least amount of effort.

It’s all to do with the pice of land…

UK is a small island with lots of people and strict planning rules.

Land by motorways with planning permission for industrial use and ready access to the M-Way itself is very expensive.

If you put a decent surface down in the truck park and fence it you have to pay business rates on it.

The guy that set up the truck stop at on the A38 at Gossington spent a lot of money, and was undercut by catering vans in the nearby laybys. Result: the truckstop closed.

If drivers were better paid in the UK, they could afford to use better facilities etc. If they weren’t maxxing out their hours they could choose where to stop. It’s a recipe for bad service and poor value for money.

In Spain they have those great Hostals by the motorway that are like a budget hotel, a truckstop/cafe and a village pub all rolled into one, and run as ‘mom & pop’ businesses.

Nothing like that here in the UK.

you wouldnt coz she wudnt let u lol

The main fact is your MSA doesn’t want lorrys but as I beleave part of the planning legistation states they must provide parking for hgvs
One coach carrys 53 people all with blue rinses n money to spend
One lorry carrys one person with no money to spend
I think the ansa is simply parking areas should be avalable off major routes with a small fee in return for clean toilets etc but then again it would prop ably just turn into a Cottaging or doggin site
The other thing is MSA / truckstops are private land so I guess it’s up to them what they charge I’m not defending them buy any means but would u be happy with a great big air pouluting juggernaut parked on your drive then in the morning some smelly overweight egg stained white vest wearing hairy ■■■ trucker comes n has a banging ■■■■■ in your bog
N all this for 20 quid not bad value really
