Why did you start the thread ?

That’s what I am wondering.

That’s what everybody’s wondering. You’re the only one who knows the answer though.

I saw this thread last night and thought oh, this guy’s just making an observation!

nothing more

Thanks daffyd. Was beginning to think I was trapped in a corner with no escape. That was exactly the point. From now on I will stick to bridge strikes, slagging off agency drivers and asking tacho questions

You don’t need to be screwing people over to have these things, you just have to be smart with what you do with your money. One thing not considered is that the Rangy and the Cayenne may be on credit. If you don’t drink, don’t smoke and have little debt you can easily afford to buy them.

Two things you’ve not taken into account is that he has to pay drivers the following week for the work they do but it could be 3 months before he sees the money. The second thing is that he actually has to see the money. A friend of mine who ran an agency had 20 workers in at a factory full time. He went under with debts of over £50k because the factory didn’t pay. Doesn’t take long to rack up that amount of debt when you’re paying out £4,000 a week in wages and a customer doesn’t pay their invoice.

You can potentially make as much as he does but are you willing to take on the level of risk? It always makes me laugh when I see comments from people like you. You seem completely oblivious to the risk that people who do what he did take and completely unaware that for every one that is successful, 10 people doing the same have probably gone to the wall. Sadly in this country there are too many who think like you.

Excellent post . You may be able to reduce some of your risk by factoring the debt . However this then means you lose some of your margin.

Had a little chuckle to myself today. Did some work for a chap about three years ago. He was just setting up an agency.

He has moved into a place I pass from time to time. He has Rangey with private plate and a Cayenne with private plate.

Good on him for earning it and having the balls to do it. Shame it’s built on low paid truckers

I work for a guy who runs a small agency. He has a Maserati but then again you’ll also find him in a truck 4-5 nights a week and he pays a good wage. Not been on less than £10/hr with him yet and he pays straight through. Last night he gave me some clothing for work, polo shirts, fleeces, hi-viz.

One guy who is where I am as a self employed driver has a 64 plate Merc AMG.

I own two houses, I just drive trucks.

Well, you’re a thoroughly well rounded individual aren’t you? Wise words shagger.

I think Mike is being a bit hard on you, don’t take it personally, you’ve given us all something to read & squabble over anyway dude.

I think you were just making an observation but it was sort of left open to Mike’s point, anyway, moving on…

It was an observation right until the last sentence which turned it into a rant. The thing with language is it doesn’t take a whole lot to completely change the tone of something written. Sometimes it can be something as little as a misplaced word.

Yeah, i suppose " Who’s the mug…You decide" and “shame its built on low paid truckers” could be taken in a positive wishing the guy well type of way.

I know it’s a pipedream but it would be nice for someone making good money to pay reasonable wages and look after staff which hopefully would then spread to the customer. Instead of here’s a rubbish hourly rate. Here’s deductions and be thankful we give you work. Which in turns makes drivers not give a stuff. Not take care with kit and certainly communicate with the end client poorly.

John Lewis Partnership manage it.
