Yeah good luck with retirement. I retired early and I can honestly say it’s the best thing I have ever done. Keep yourself relatively busy but most of all ENJOY.

Well I am not that for sure, I retired from the industry last Friday and have just had my first week as a pensioner.I started driving commercially on a Bedford TK in 1975, passed my Class 1 at 21 and have been regularly employed for every day of my working life. Time to kick back and relax, and leave to the young ones to screw it up even more. I have not the remotest interest in the road transport business as it stands any more. All I can say is good luck to all of you who will have to endure the massive coming upheavals and uncertainty, please stay safe and stay lucky.I think my time on here is over too. Cheerio!
A good motor the…
F88 and you’re a good forum contributor.
The young ones screw up less cos us oldies usually point out that ‘hitting it that way will hurt, hitting it this way won’t.’

I think a lot of drivers aren’t going to be going back to work; they just don’t know it yet.Definitely the case I think, once furlough is ended a lot of companies will be in the [zb].

We also do Pallet ways but there’s no money in thatSent while in furlough

By all means put your feet up you’ve earned it, but please don’t disappear from here.
I’ve been furloughed for nearly 8 weeks! Been told unofficially that I probably won’t be starting back until June 1st now.
Am I chomping at the bit to get back in the saddle? Years ago I probably would have been but not now, I’ve really enjoyed the time off.
But… in another way I am eager to get back to work because I know I’ve got to eventually so it may as well be sooner than later. If I had hit the retirement age I’d be more than happy never to drive a truck again it seems [emoji1]

Having 80% of furloughed driver’s wages paid for - doesn’t cover the yard for all those other costs. What happens too, when things DO get back to normal, and the yard just isn’t ready to kick back into gear in 24 hours, say, rather than the several days and weeks more likely to be needed to get everything running “No teething troubles” as it were?
My guess is that any firm - not just transport related industry - will want to warm up the engine before the official return to work is given. That way, they are at the front of the queue to pick up all the business ahead of the competition…
Thus, I suggest that the LAST yard back to work off Furlough - will end up with no business left for them, because the Economy would have already shrunk significantly by that point, and perhaps those yards who snapped up the fresh work ahead of them - might have had to undercut each other to get that…
Perhaps taking too much furlough grant or any other kind of “help” from Government - will end up being nothing but a poisoned chalice?
…Keep an eye on the TEACHERS I suggest. There’s no inventive for them to return to work EVER as it stands - is there?
We might even end up with a kind of “Open Univerisity” for the entire education system, at least for the higher years…
A-level and upward class sizes - should be able to limbo this 15 pupil class size limit being spoken of, for instance…
A classic example there of "people leaving it so long on furlough - that by the time they are ready to return to work - there’s no job for them any more!!
The furloughing scheme is the government paying benefits up front, as closing it down would just lead to workers being made redundant and claiming universal credit.
I believe most transport companies will do phased returns, see if there’s enough work, if yes bring more back.
The exception being events companies as most of these will not see any business this summer. Already been told F1 will be behind closed doors and minimum staff so no corporate/sponsorship facilities required.

What’s the betting that there may be a long term plan here to remove all unionized workers from their jobs, put them on what starts out as being furlough pay, then flip it over into Universal Credit, and then with CROSS PARTY SUPPORT - turn that Universal Credit into “Universal Basic Income”…?
Hey Presto - you’ve got rid of an entire generation of “feet of clay” jobs, and replaced them with “Gig Economy” jobs, that even manage to bypass agencies in the process…
Teaching - Moved to Online
Office Block Work, such as Financial insurance, stockbroking, etc - Move to people working from home.
A LOT less traffic on our roads - ongoingly.
Less Commutes - Less Pollution - Less need for “Green Lobby” now.
Just as Nigel Farage wrecked the Far Right of politics by his own admission - Boris would seem to be taking away the Greenies main argument now - “Job Already DONE” by this point - why ever vote them in again?
…Kiss Lucas goodbye
Get rid of the SNP? - Boris can do that at any time by offering Sturgeon the right to call a referendum for the remainder of this parliament, either a Brexit one, a Scottish InyRef2 one, or BOTH.
Can’t you see the catch here? - If she holds it - she can at best tread water with the same result as last time. What if Scotland now votes FOR Brexit, or votes even more TO remain in the UK now?
…She’ll never hold either of those two referendums, and when the next election comes - she’s GONE for not doin’ what it sed on the tin!
Keeping Scotland in the UK at present - is a comparable cost to the English taxpayer as Furlough Pay and EU contributions combined because Oil just doesn’t make up the gap any more!
Scotland’s best hope of being a big shot in or out of the UK - is to learn how to make cheap power on a much larger scale than at present.
Wouldn’t we rather import cheaper electricity from Scotland rather than pay the Frenchies through the nose for it?
